Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsIs that funny animated show 'Family Guy' secretly anti-Semitic?
In a 2009 episode, Family Goy, Peter dresses up as a Hasidic Jew and, standing outside of a synagogue, tells worshippers that he went shopping and they wanted $800 for a TV, but I usd them down to $500, prompting a beating.
True, other faiths take their knocks in Family Guy, and some of the representations of Jews and Judaism in the series are favorable. Other animated comedies poke fun at Jewish foibles, as well. The Simpsons Krusty the Clown is a lapsed Jew and a committed reprobate. South Parks Kyle Broflovski is a conflicted Jewish kid with a yente mother and a lawyer father who wears a kipa. Another character in South Park, whose co-creator Matt Stone is a secular Jew, is a despised anti-Semite and occasional neo-Nazi. But the satire in these shows, often written by Jews, is knowing and good natured.
In Family Guy, in contrast, there is consistent meanness that reinforces classic, anti-Semitic stereotypes: greedy, cheap, cowardly, whiny, averse to physical labor, and in control of Hollywood.
Seth MacFarlane, it seems, is simply a wittier version of Mel Gibson.

The other day I was talking to someone here at DU about Family Guy and how some people find it offensive. Then I saw this
interesting article from a few months ago. More at link.
I think Family Guy tries its best to offend everybody (at least it really grosses me out most of the time)but I really don't watch it very much.
If this post itself is offensive then go ahead an have it removed. I just thought it was interesting to think about what if a program offends everybody.

(27,461 posts)this article makes a distinction between good-natured and mean and to me that makes all the difference.
I don't see any reason why this thread would be removed.

(23,487 posts)Greedy cheap cowardly whiney adverse to physical labor controlling Hollywood. Yup that was all in Jack Benny's self depricating humor and it dates back to 1933. I find it pretty funny too and I'm Jewish.

That he could do all those stereotypes back then and people loved him.
Him and Red Skelton were my favorites.

(15,374 posts)I read or heard some interviews about Futurama being described by Groening and others as being more Jewish in its humor - not just Dr. Zoidberg - but in general when compared with the Simpsons. Any thoughts on that?

(19,803 posts)nothing takes a more brutal beating than Meg Griffin.
Seth McFarlane and his writers hit every possible target, blacks, gays, jews, women, fat people, the handicapped, animals, Jesus, muslims, government, Irish, drunks, irish drunks, Obama, kids, the south,Japanese, guys that look like Bob Hope ...everything. To say there is one atom nore of anti-semitism on his shows means you are very selective.
