Polls Show GOP Base Has Impeachment Fever, Even As Party Leaders Run From It

Polls Show GOP Base Has Impeachment Fever, Even As Party Leaders Run From It

Bereft of many good options ahead of the November midterms, Democrats have been eager to use the fringe impeachment chatter as a cudgel against Republicans. The gambit has not gone unnoticed on the right.

House Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) said late last month that Republicans "have no future plans" to impeach President Obama, scoffing at what he described as a "scam started by Democrats at the White House" to gin up the base and raise money.

But the idea — however quixotic — clearly annoys Boehner more than the voters he hopes will turn out en masse in November.

Polls conducted last month by CNN/ORC, Fox News and Rasmussen Reports all found close to 60 percent of Republicans in favor of impeaching and removing Obama from office.

Each poll found that wide majorities of the public at large — and virtually every other demographic group — oppose impeachment.

when every single day brought a new revelation that Clinton was a horndog (not news to the rest of us) and vicious gossip was accepted as though it had been carved into stone tablets.

When asked what the charges are, they come out with some phrase they heard on "Cops" that is general but doesn't address specific behavior. When asked for particulars, they're likely to say something on the order of "Well, don't you KNOW?" If you say you don't know, please enlighten me, they'll call you stupid and stomp away.

These people think in slogans and buzz words. The way the critical thinking world behaves is completely beyond their capacity. They can cope with their jobs, but anything outside work is done on a bumper sticker level. At present, they're unreachable and unteachable.

We have to hope enough Republicans in Congress remember exactly what happened after they tried to impeach Clinton mostly for being a Democrat. The House Managers who were behind it were the first out on their cans.
