Police: Electronic MDOT sign was hacked

DETROIT, Mich. (WOOD) - An electronic road construction sign near Dearborn, Mich. displayed a racial slur early Monday morning, targeting a Florida teenager who was fatally shot in February.

The sign referenced Trayvon Martin who police said was killed by neighborhood watch volunteer George Zimmerman in self-defense. It has yet been decided if Zimmerman will be charged in the shooting.

The Michigan Department of Transportation sign, which read "Trayvon a N*****," is located on Interstate 94 near Addison Street, west of downtown Detroit, WDIV reports.

Passersby noticed the hacked sign about 1 a.m. and called police who said they received numerous calls about the incident.

I'm convinced that racism is surging in this country. I attribute it a combination of having a black President- and let's face it, a lot of the opposition to him is the color of his skin, and yes I think that includes some republican members of Congress- and the right wing working assiduously to make racism more acceptable, we're in a really disturbing place in this country.

How have the right wing/republicans made racism more acceptable? By calling every incident of racism, no matter how vile, "the race card", by demonizing black Americans the way the Repuke candidates for President have.

The Freepers reacted to this story in a way that's beneath contempt- and I mention that because I don't think they're really some tiny minority. They may be more extreme and vile than your rank and file republican, but they are much more in line with the puke party and its platform than they were just 10 years ago.

Even if you add hate radio /TV can someone really say that they"change" people in to racists?

I know that the paragraph didnt and said it is making it more acceptable ...but is it an easy out to blame a few for the racism that was there all along and infer that good people are being led astray.

Someone could live under a biracial president , watch infighting with racial tones in congress and listen to hate media and see it all for what it is- racism but that doesnt mean it will turn them in to a racist.

Sver since Regan , Bush and Bush , what i call our intolerance quotion has gone up. As a little boy i kept hearing about this on the tv and radio in films and on the news and ppls remarks. when i was said same little boy i asked my mom , when will this ever stop( meaning racism)? mom looked at me and said " i don't know". I t may take an outside source to stop all this bickering.(meaning an outside threat ) i love this country and am disgusted at it the same time . I also feel that our best time for this country was from the late 1800s to Bill Clinton , sans McCarthy , Bush Bush and Reagan. I hope Mr Zimmerman lives with his conscience.

This had to have been an inside job. Although these signs are easy to hack, it does take some time unless you are fluent with the system and have the laptop with the right software and interface cable.

If it was one of the older systems with the little console built in (and not the laptop interface) then it would take even longer for a non-insider to do. Surely, they would have been noticed.
