The guy who just won the Democratic nomination for Governor did it with ZERO money, and did not campaign. He is 72 years old, and he is a retired union guy who loves to hunt and fish. He cares about the environment.
Name recognition?
HIS NAME IS CHARLIE BROWN!

The Alvin Greene of 2014
Meet Tennessees accidental Democratic nominee for governor, a 72-year-old hunter who didnt do any campaigning.
For Democratic party leaders in Tennessee, this years governors race was less about who they could get on the ballot than who they failed to keep off of it. The state offers almost no barriers to entry. Filing fees are nonexistent and a grand total of 25 signatures are needed to become a candidate. The man who emerged from this no-horse race to win Thursdays Democratic primary has no chance to win in November. But its still worth hearing what Charlie Brown has to say.
This falls election in the heavily red state didnt figure to be close, even before most of the Democratic partys top candidates declined to run. Republican Bill Haslam cruised to victory in 2010 and has a multi-million-dollar war chest. No incumbent governor in the state has failed to win re-election since 1979, and even that figure is misleadingthe governor that year, Ray Blanton, was hampered by the fact that he was on his way to jail. And this wasnt the first time Tennessee Democrats nominated a virtual unknown: Two years ago, the states party was embarrassed by the accidental U.S. Senate nomination of Mark Clayton, a Nashville floor installer and the vice president of an anti-gay hate group.

From a distance, Brown would seem like an easy man to parody. Hes not. During our hourlong conversation, he brought up a number of issues that made him sound more like a concerned citizen than a Southern stereotype. Brown said he had been in a union all his life, and was dismayed at the way his home state treated organized labor, including groups representing teachers and prison guards. He thought that the clear-cutting undertaken by the states wildlife resources agency was putting that same wildlife in danger. And he brought up a number of potential scandals that he saw as disqualifying for Bill Haslam, including what he saw as a suspiciously lucrative land deal for a friend of the governors. Theres no banks in heaven, Brown told me, in response to the daunting personal wealth of his opponent, whose family fortune totals nearly $1 billion.

The candidate with so little campaigning experience was eager to ask advice from a reporter with even less. How do I make a name for myself? he asked. I told him I didnt know anything about running a campaign. His best qualitythe fact that he talked like a normal human being and not a politicianwas also his biggest liability. As if to hammer home the point, Brown told me why his wife wouldnt like the third part of his three-point plan, the one about forgoing a salary in favor of purchasing some large deer. Shes just after me constantly about buying a new truck, but I aint doing it, he said. If I want to go to the mountains I go to the mountains. If I want to go to the lake I go to the lake. Nothings wrong with the truck I have now.

(44,130 posts)I moved here in Jan., and I've noticed there seems to be a fair amount of upper middle class to one per centers, at least around Nashville and surrounding areas.
Clearly not in need of expanded Medicaid.....so SCREW everyone that does and re-elect the
rich a$$hat who denies poor families who ARE in need.
Now those who ARE in need and vote for the rich a$$hat who denies them......well....

(1,020 posts)He won because his name was on the top of the ballot. In TN elections the names are always listed alphabetically. I have seen this happen her many times. In the absence of a known person on the ballot (people that can campaign and have TV/Radio commercials), the person on the top of the ballot wins.

Talk about an opportunity to take back Tennessee - !!!

(1,020 posts)But Haslam is a very well known current Governor and will not lose. I am so disappointed that a well known Democrat did not run for either Governor or Senator (against Alexander) this year. Both of then would have been good races if a named Democrat would have run. As it is the unknown Democrat in both races will get between 25-35% just because they are on the ballot. I am hoping that the democrat running (Joe Carr) for senator will actually put up a fight.
