Survey: Violence, guns among top child health concerns

A new survey shows that school violence and gun-related injuries are among Americans’ top concerns related to child health nationwide. But, those polled don’t necessarily expect them to be a problem in their local areas.

Each year, the University of Michigan C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital National Poll on Children’s Health asks U.S. adults in the U.S. about their concerns related to child health issues. For the first time this year, the pollsters asked respondents to provide their views from two perspectives: Child health problems in their local communities, and also across the U.S.

On both a local and national level, childhood obesity was cited as the top health concern for children in 2014. That’s consistent with past surveys. But when asked about their concerns about children nationally, those polled put school violence and gun-related injuries in the top 10.
