Fox News host Shepard Smith on Tuesday asserted that actor Robin Williams was such a coward for allegedly committing suicide.
At the conclusion of a touching special report that aired just hours after Williams died, Smith seemed to become almost angry while thinking about the actors children.
The Fox News host noted that Williams had once told a story about his daughter, Zelda, who asked him to read a book to her in his normal voice.
One of the children he so loved, one of the children grieving tonight, Smith said. Because their father killed himself in a fit of depression.

(1,307 posts)What a way to stigmatize depression. What a way to, almost knowingly, choose to not understand or care about depression.

(16,296 posts)There is anger when a beloved member of your family, someone who is dear to you even if it is not in your immediate family, commits suicide. A dear friend of mine took his life a few months after his wife died and I was first shocked, then sad and then angry he had done so. Even today, years after, there is still that emotional debris he left behind in his family and friends . Shepard felt a legitimate emotion in labeling Robin. The anger is understandable and Robin's children will be grieving and asking themselves ,"why?" for many nights placing a emotional burden on them for the rest of their lives.
Shepard Smith showed a lack of understanding about the deep, dark pit of depression. Some can pull themselves out of it, others live in it, still others cannot face that smothering blanket of despair and take their lives for relief. For this he needs criticism, but I can understand his poor choice of words in calling Robin a coward and his concern about the after effects on Robin's children.

(4,291 posts)I get that you couched it by calling it a poor choice of words, but NOBODY, especially an asshole with a microphone has the right to call Robin a coward. Robin's children are not the concern of Shep Smith, and IF they were, he should have kept his mouth shut when speaking ill of their beloved DAD!
As for your comment "Shepard felt a legitimate emotion in labeling Robin" that is total hooey and a piss poor sentence.

(16,296 posts)As one who had dear friends and relatives take their lives, I experienced bewilderment and anger at them. Shepard Smith was pissed and emotional and angry. You, I, and many millions of people throughout the world are an example of the collateral damage left behind by people who take their lives. Are you angry at me? Why - because I understand how raw that experience is on the people left behind? Because I understand the vacuum that is created in the lives of the living when someone takes that final step and leaves us. There is an emptiness there which you shout into every day. You don't know ANYTHING about me and your post is condescending and you should apologize.
apologize to you? "Bite me"
