An extreme deluge nearly unprecedented in Detroit history brought the Motor City to a virtual standstill during the evening rush hour on Monday, with 4.57" of rain falling at the official measurement site at Detroit Metro Airport. The only wetter day in Detroit history (4.75" occurred on July 31 - August 1, 1925--over two years before the Ford Model A went into production. A slow-moving low pressure system tracked over Michigan on Monday, bringing thunderstorms that dumped 4 - 6" of rain--nearly two months' worth--over Metro Detroit in just four hours. Many major expressways in the city remain closed today due to floodwaters and flood damage. The northern Detroit suburb of Warren, where 5" of rain fell, has declared a state of emergency. Over 1,000 vehicles have been abandoned on major thoroughfares, and many more in neighborhoods. One person died in the storm--a heart attack victim found dead in her flooded car. All of Detroit's major expressways were closed due to flooding during the deluge; in my 40 years living in the area, I've never seen a flood do that. Detroit radar shows that a new round of showers is affecting the area this afternoon, which will slow efforts to drain the water off of blocked roads.

Haven't seen anything about this anywhere?

(29,876 posts)we could have definitely used more.
The newscasts out of Detroit showed the flooding and it really was hard to believe for Michigan. I've seen rain like that down in Houston, like the 9 inch deluge we had around '92-93 but not up here.
One of the coolest summers we have had too.

(26,251 posts)And we're behind Detroit in the amount of rain we've received. There is a lot of damage for people who can't afford the repairs. This is usually our hottest and driest time of the year but nothing has been normal, weather wise, since the big ice storm, last December. I'm praying that my sump pump holds out.

(22,308 posts)I was late for work because the freeway was closed.
A couple people didn't even make it into work today.
It was really bad.

(22,308 posts)Even the stretch of freeway that was closed this morning is open again.
My friend who does insurance had a rough day at work, but besides that all is good.
Thanks for the kind thought though, much appreciated.

(7,968 posts)We got about a 1/5 the rain that Detroit got. They got a direct hit from the center apparently. The good news so far today is that the rain has not been that extreme or anywhere near that today.
We've had one brief hard shower so far.

(21,529 posts)I poured here, but not nearly as bad as areas east of me and slightly north of the city. it was all they talked about on the news last night, except for mentioning Robin Williams.
I696 and I75 is a heavily traveled interchange north of the city. over 100,000 vehicles a day. I75 drops down under I 696. They showed the bridge that carries I696 over I75, which is 15 feet above I75. The floor water was all the way up to the bridge. There is a pumping station at the interchange which blew and basically dumped pump storm water into the interchange on top of the 5 inches of rain.
I was very fortunate to have no flooding where I am. 3 coworkers didn't make it to work today. one told me he drove through a few inches of water and nearly lost his car going home Monday night. I don't know about the other two. one person I work with lives in royal oak, one of the hardest hit cities, and he said driving home water was almost at the top of his tires, and a wave made by other cars actually swept over his hood. I don't know how his car survived! another woman showed my pictures of the water coming right up to her front step, and the rabbits that invaded her home to escape drowning. another said he had 2" of water in his basement.
