Robin Williams Hanged Himself, Confirms Coroner

According to the preliminary result of the forensic investigation, Robin Williams' cause of death was asphyxiation by hanging, Lt. Keith Boyd of the Marin County Sheriff's Office said during a press conference on Aug. 12.

The 63-year-old actor was found dead in his home in Tiburon, California, near San Francisco on Aug. 11.

According to Boyd, Williams was last seen by his wife around 10:30 p.m. on Aug. 10, and was found by his assistant at approximately 11:45 a.m. the next day. Boyd described the circumstances in which Williams was found, and said that his body showed indications he had attempted an alternate method.

When asked if Williams left behind a note, Boyd replied, “We’re not going to discuss the note ... at this time.”

My heart actually hurt when I read he hung himself and tried to slash his wrists. It is a raw hurt, he was my Sunshine Man, my Golden Child, the one I always looked to when MY life was stressed out and I felt depressed.

That funny little clown always made me laugh, except for now...I am weeping and depressed and angry and feeling a little lonelier in this universe.

We lost our Bard and it breaks my heart.

4. It is heart wrenching to think that he is dead and even more that he died so horrible

a death--a violent and very agonizing death.

I am so very sorry we have failed such a wonderful man--who gave to so many.

5. I suspected this last night. This is just aweful. The note probably should never be

read in public. Clearly Williams was a very sad man. It makes sense but it just doesn't seem right that he could go out like this.

It depends. I would say that it should be read to whoever it was written for. If he wrote it to the public, it should be read to the public. That is really the honorable thing to do.

And all these years later I'm still not sure how I feel about it. At the time it helped me understand, which is why I think she read it. But it's so deeply sad and personal one almost feels like a voyeur.

This is SO tragic. His amazing comedic and dramatic brilliance must have been a mask to hide the pain - and he hid it quite well. I knew he had drug/alcohol issues - but no idea about the severe depression.

12. Death by strangulation is about as horrific as it gets - short of burning alive, I suppose.

Choosing such a slow, painful method seems to indicate a massive amount of spite and self-loathing. Which is to say, emotional suffering beyond what many of us can imagine, let alone endure.
