(135,425 posts)We often assign military personnel to foreign militaries, and foreign militaries assign personnel to the US forces, as well. Foreign military personnel work as company officers in officer training, in "purple" logistics assignments, as guest airmen in squadrons and at sea, they attend war college, the service academies, and military post-graduate courses, and they also take training over here. There is a small German base, flying the German flag, out at Dulles Airport. They also have a training facility within a larger base in New Mexico.
Service members working in an advisory capacity in a foreign country are not "boots on the ground." The term "boots on the ground" is a reference to COMBAT troops, not guards, not advisors, not intel analysts. Otherwise, there are German "boots on the ground" (to say nothing of dozens of other nations) here in USA.
Here are US National Guard from AL and GA jumping from US aircraft with French Foreign Legion personnel from US aircraft..those aren't US "boots on the ground" in France..
