(4,835 posts)Promoting candy - in a state that leads the nation in obesity?
that is exactly what I mean, how did you figure it out.
It wouldn't work if we, the candy and fried food cartel of making people fat (CFFCMPF - we're working on a catchier acronym), tried this underhanded and fully thought out plan in a healthy State like Vermont but when we approached the vice-principal of a school in West Virginia we knew that we found our mark.
There are so many things that deservedly piss people off then there are people that go out of their way to find something to be pissed off about. Maybe she didn't have time to find an apple costume and this was all that she had.

What a waste to lock ourselves up with just the CFFCMPF when we could have been the CFFCMPF&S (for and smokes). Maybe we could have the teachers aids dress up as heroin filled syringes and oxycontin tablets.

(37,364 posts)Willy Wonka went to school for Back to School night. It was a social event for kids and parents to meet each other and the teachers and to find their desks. Last time I checked Willy Wonka was still in the realm of children's entertainment and books.

Fourth graders never watch Willy Wonka? I'll have to cleanse my grandchildren's minds of their memories of watching that film and destroy the DVD.
The Willy Wonka candies, I recall, came out after the movie was made and was popular. I have no problem with the woman trying to wear a costume for this event. Nowhere can I discern that this event was sponsored by the manufacturer.

(4,297 posts)This is all part of the affective element in education. You pair education with some strong positive association they already have, which decreases any fear and/or resistance to the situation, and then you gradually introduce what they need to learn.

(19,964 posts)The schools in Berkeley County serve free meals to needy children throughout the summer. This is an invaluable service because for many poor kids, the meals they receive at school may be the only meals they have every day. This results in a huge problem when school is out for the summer, so this program assures that kids can still eat when school is not in session. I've had kids knock at my door because they are hungry and I've fed them. I also raise organic produce in my modest garden and pass out fresh, nutritious food for free to neighbors who are scrabbling to get by. Other than complain about a teacher wearing a silly costume, what've you got?

(22,336 posts)Kids like candy, so it gets their attention. Did they hand out a bunch of candy to the kids, or was it just about the book? The book is about candy.
