The Great White Hope
MAY 20, 2014
<...>
Craig and Richesons second study, On the Precipice of a Majority-Minority America, published last month, is even more directly relevant to the strategic choices facing Republicans. The authors found that whites whether they called themselves liberals, centrists or conservatives all moved to the right when exposed to the information about the approaching minority status of whites. This suggests that the increasing diversity of the nation may engender a widening partisan divide, Craig and Richeson write.
These findings led the two authors to observe that the future of the contemporary Republican Party may not be as bleak as some say. Whites may be increasingly likely and motivated to support conservative candidates and policies in response to the changing racial demographics, they write. These results suggest that presumptions of the decline of the Republican Party due to the very same changing racial demographics may be premature.
<...>
P.R.R.I. initially asked respondents a direct question: did they agree or disagree with the statement, The idea of an America where most people are not white bothers me. As you might expect, agreement was low, with just 13 percent saying they were bothered by the prospect of a majority-minority America. Then P.R.R.I. used a separate indirect technique to try to determine how many respondents were in fact disturbed by the growth of the minority population, but unwilling to admit it.
<...>
White Democrats, at 11 percent, were more circumspect than white Republicans, at 18 percent, when explicitly asked if they were bothered (see Figure 1). But the indirect response technique revealed another interesting fault line: The list experiment showed that a slightly higher percentage of white Democrats, 33 percent (compared to 30 percent of white Republicans), are bothered by the United States becoming a white minority nation.

(82,849 posts)What if liberal whites don't move to the right? Or some do and some don't? Will it all be attributable to white people losing majority status? Or will it be due to other factors? Will white liberals who don't get more conservative become traitors to their race? The New York Times paid someone for this bullshit.

but when it comes to people of different backgrounds moving in their neighborhoods they get uncomfortable.

She and her team were able to exploit race during the 2007-2008 primaries once she started losing. Maybe her Southern Strategy tactic will help her.

Why do you think she supports Israel, because she knows the GOp has been trying to woo another Democrat stalwart, the Jews. Not that Jews are falling for it (as Noam Chomsky can tell you) but the overture is made that Democrats will not threaten the Mid east war machinewith Hillary in charge.

(38,613 posts)There will still be more white people than any other kind of people. But by framing it as "white minority" it seems almost designed to make people think "more Latinos than whites" and thus affects how people might react.

(31,483 posts)That's what seems to be happening in my family, at any rate. In 4 generations we've gone from 100% Swedish to the inclusion of Native American, Asian and Hawaiian, among others. If my grandchildren and great grandchildren were to tally all of their ethnic roots, it would sound like a roll call at the UN. I see the same thing happening in many families I know.

The color "white" is a delusion, anyway. I believe that many white people have actual brain damage from the mental gymnastics required of them in early childhood, trying to look at their pale brown skin and "see" the color white there. Nobody is really white. When I worked with children in small groups, I used to place a piece of white paper on the beige table and put my beige hand across the paper and ask them, "What color is the table? What color is the paper? What color is my hand?" Then I would push the paper over in their direction. "And what color is your hand?" They were genuinely confused. The human race comes in various shades of brown. Some are pale or pinkish brown (beige?), some are medium brown(tan?), and some are deep brown (chocolate?). I took these synonyms out of my thesaurus, all under the listing for "brown." The shade differences have been exaggerated to create divisions that can be exploited by crafty manipulators.

(11,339 posts)... that some of the "white" kids had darker skin than some of the "black" kids. Yes, there's a range, and race is a social construct that has little to do with "color".

(80,693 posts)Consider - if humans disappeared off the face of the earth, what would happen to the dogs? Those that survived would be mating at random, and all the different breeds of dogs would soon disappear. They'd be bred out. And what you'd be left with would be one main general all-purpose dog, probably medium-large in size, and medium-brown in color.

He retired as an engineer working on the Apollo project. Metal parts he designed and held in his hands are in the Smithsonian. I have a bit of metal that orbited the moon.
My grandfather was never hard-core racist, misogynist, or homophobic. He truly had friends of all colors, sexes, ethnic backgrounds, and sexual orientations. He moved freely in Hollywood culture, kept confidences. Gay, Jewish, Black, Woman, whatever. In a professional setting it didn't matter to him. What most mattered to him was the engineering, the math.
But as a white kid born at the dawn of the twentieth century, and later as an Army Air Force officer, he was often blind to his own "white privilege." The miscegenation of my generation troubled him at first. He even had trouble with my mom's background. She was as American wild west as he was, and not thank God (in his words again) Mormon, but my mom's family never made any effort to conceal their origins as Scandinavian and British Island Catholics, Quakers, Jews, and other assorted heretics, pacifists and misfits who fled Europe to America (and some of them the U.S. Civil War) when political or ethnic conflicts got too hot. Better hungry and lost than hung.
One of my ancestors was a mail order bride to Salt Lake City who didn't like sharing a husband and ran off with a U.S government surveyor, later establishing a homestead that is still a very long ways down a dirt and gravel road from the nearest Wal-Mart or MacDonalds, especially in the winter. My own kids, nephews and nieces, are like "roll call at the UN."
I haven't lived in "white" communities for most of my life now. I've been a "minority" white guy in my communities for a long, long, time. But I still experience occasional evidence of white male privilege. I don't like that. Don't call me "sir" and switch to English when I'm just the guy tagging along on my wife's business. Don't be the guy who talks only to the man of the household. You'll offend us both, no sale.

(19,404 posts)Maybe I missed an important paragraph, but all I saw was that the study uncovered evidence that white Democrats were more "bothered" by the prospect of the US becoming a white minority nation than they were willing to admit, perhaps even to themselves. I don't know what the respondents meant by "bothered" and I don't think the researchers do, either.
More important, the conclusion that these white voters will therefore become more conservative in their voting is a supposition by the researchers. I didn't see where that came from in their data.

(24,544 posts)and the "it's not race, it's class" argument is the calling card of the stupid and deliberately ignorant.
Mitt Romney won a landslide among white voters, defeating Barack Obama by 59 to 39 percent. In the process he won every large segment of white voters, often by double-digit margins: white men, white women, white Catholics, white Protestants, white old people, white young people.
Yet, when a black poster here dared to raise a similar point, it lead to a mega epic whine with a thousand responses and half as many recs.

(24,544 posts)That exposure to the changing demographics evokes the expression of greater explicit and implicit racial bias. One group of respondents was shown evidence of the demographic trends and another was not. Those who saw the evidence expressed more negative attitudes toward Latinos, Blacks, and Asian-Americans than participants who were not shown the evidence. The authors concluded that rather than ushering in a more tolerant future, the increasing diversity of the nation may instead yield intergroup hostility.
The authors found that whites whether they called themselves liberals, centrists or conservatives all moved to the right when exposed to the information about the approaching minority status of whites

I do not judge people by their skin color but rather their character. Only ignorance, racism and stupidity would cause white liberals to move right.

(19,549 posts)To assume just because some white liberals may be more "bothered" than they admit openly at the prospect of becoming a minority, doesn't mean they're going to change their whole ideology. That's projecting the reaction of conservatives onto non-conservatives. It could just as easily mean they recognize that minorities in the US are discriminated against, and the reality of their being associated with the word evokes feelings which "bother" them.

The term minority, at least as used to describe racial and ethnic groups in the United States, may need to be retired or rethought soon: by the end of this decade, according to Census Bureau projections released Wednesday, no single racial or ethnic group will constitute a majority of children under 18. And in about three decades, no single group will constitute a majority of the country as a whole.
P.S.: NYC where I live, has been a minority majority city for some time and it hasn't resulted in the end of civilization as we know it. See below the NYTimes again: http://www.nytimes.com/2011/03/28/nyregion/28nycensus.html :

For the first time, black, Hispanic and Asian residents of New York City and its suburbs are a majority of the metropolitan areas more than 19 million residents, according to the 2010 census, released last week.
New York is the first major metropolitan area in the country outside the South or West in which non-Hispanic whites have become a minority of the population.
Some of the same dynamic that transformed New York into a majority-minority city in the 1980s also contributed to that benchmark in the 23 counties that make up the metropolitan area: New Yorks five boroughs, as well as Nassau, Suffolk, Westchester, Rockland and Putnam Counties, Fairfield County in Connecticut and 12 counties in New Jersey.
