Five minute major. If the rioter is involved in a fight in the ensuing hockey it will be an automatic game misconduct.

Also not the only Canadian police riot, and they've had a few hockey and 'we want more show' riots as well, which are the tawdry end of the riot spectrum.

Brixton, for example. British historians have written about food riots. Just because you don't see something on TV doesn't mean it doesn't exist.

How many seals are killed each year?

In recent years, hundreds of thousands of seals have been killed annually in the commercial seal hunt. More than one million seals have been slaughtered in the past five years alone. These kill levels are among the highest witnessed in Canada in half a century. The last time seals were killed at this rate—in the 1950s and '60s—the harp seal population was reduced by as much as two thirds.

Moreover, the actual number of seals killed is likely higher than the number reported. Many seals are shot at and injured in the course of the hunt, and studies suggest that a significant number of these animals slip beneath the surface of the water, where they die slowly and are never recovered.

Probably not as commonly as in the UK, but that may be just because I'm more aware of what happens in the UK.

But:

Not to mention, the occasional hockey riots: some Canadian hockey fans could give British football fans a run for their money any day of the week with regard to violence when their team loses!

Canadians have the international reputation of being polite, courteous and, let’s face it, a little boring. However, we have civil disobedience coursing through our national veins as thick as maple syrup -- yes, Canada has a long (we won’t say proud) history of rioting. We’ve rioted over labour disputes, for social change and even over hockey -- a lot over hockey.

Our history also includes several race riots, like the attack on black workers in 18th Century Nova Scotia, and the anti-Chinese riots of BC a hundred years later. The most recent riot in our history happened just last year in Montreal North. Following the fatal police shooting of 18-year-old Fredy Villanueva, youth from that area vandalized the neighbourhood in protest. However, these riots didn’t quite make our top 10.

For our top 10 Canadian riots, we picked the biggest, most widespread, most destructive, and most expensive Canuck acts of sh*t-disturbing we could find.
