. . . I don't get the impression that he really believes anything is institutionally or fundamentally wrong with that police force.

His actions will speak for that, tho . . .

Capt. Ronald Johnson inspires some confidence with his tone and comments. We'll see . . .

oh, snap! Jonathan Capehart just said almost the exact same thing!

Like most politicians, he is completely incapable of criticizing the police, even when they run riot, make a goddamn fool of him, and force him to essentially fire them on national television.

He looks like a fucking jackass, which is precisely what he is, forced to do the right thing by near universal outrage at the incompetence of his subordinates.

It's sometimes referred to as "shitting down his leg", usually in reference to a pitcher who is melting down.

Gov. Nixon comes across as a politician's politician.

He can talk all around a direct question and not say anything.

I hope his decision to finally get the state government involved is not too little, too late.

No accountability for the police -- that would be 'looking backward.'

No curiousity as to who gave the orders for a police riot -- that happened yesterday. Gotta look forward, don't cha know.

I was hopeful that things would change, but he seems like such a clueless bumbler, I'm thinking the federal government is going to have to step in in the end. Which is sad.

Let's be clear: this kind of out-of-control police overkill to demonstrations has not happened in other municipalities where (and this must also be stated) similar problems have existed. We've had many incidents of police brutality toward young black males in many cities; we've even had many--far too many--police killings of unarmed young black men. What we have NOT had in those places, however, is the degree of non-transparency this municipality and county have maintained; and we have not had such a disproportionate reaction to protests in the community.

We've got two problems here: the long-term problem of racial profiling and poor police relations regarding the black community. This exists in every city and in every state—from New York to Los Angeles. And we need to start addressing it seriously, everywhere.

Then there's the short-term problem of the horrendous police behavior in Ferguson, St Louis County, and the State of Missouri. This is different. I've seen large-scale protests in Chicago, New York, and elsewhere that have been dealt with professionally and sensibly, without all this horror and abrogation of civil rights. That needs to be dealt with right now, today, right there. It doesn't seem to be happening.

Who wrote it? Seemed obvious to me it was very uncomfortable for him. Don't know if because he felt under the gun from above (Obama Holder McCaskill) or if he just had not come to terms with what he had to do yet.

but he'd have called for a curfew and ordered the National Guard in with shoot to kill orders.

I suppose we have to be grateful for small things these days.

The consensus among the foul mouthed knitters I hang with is "pull the other one, Jay."

"Violence on both sides" my flabby old ass. Not last night.

but I'm not impressed with how he's handled the situation. The only good thing at this point is at least things are getting quieter and hopefully that means we'll have some answers sooner than later.
