The Pima County, Ariz., Sheriffs Department is investigating the death of two Latino immigrants who were shot last night when a group of men wearing camouflage ambushed their pickup truck.
Sheriffs Deputy Dawn Barkman told local news outlets that the shooting occurred in Eloy, about 60 miles north of Tucson. He added that the victims were traveling with a larger group in a wash commonly used for human smuggling when an unknown number of men armed with rifles began firing.
Investigators responding to the shooting found one of the victims in the bed of the truck. A second was found nearby on the ground. Several others who survived were hiding in the brush nearby.
The Tucson Sentinel reported that on Jan. 27, 2007, four men wearing military-style berets and camouflage clothing shot at a group of undocumented immigrants in a vehicle traveling through an Eloy farm field. A man and a 12-year-old child were killed.

(4,524 posts)Those people who hid in the bushes were lucky. They probably would have been executed - especially if these were the hardcore white supremacist types.
If the guns used were AR-15's, or rifles, I would say it's definitely American militia doing the shooting. Luckily, incidents like this are rare, but this should be nipped in the bud before minor incidents evolve into actual skirmishes.

(15,064 posts)violence that history has previously defined as revolutionary battles. I do not mean as in the American Revolution but things are coming to a head very fast. "Hate Mongers" have national platforms that are subsidized with advertisements by corporations. These tools of hate propaganda are considered experts to the bigots and racists that occupy the darkest corners of American society. Free speech is still limited to he fact you cannot shout fire in a crowded theater to panic people who do not realize there is no fire and eventually trample each other to death trying to escape. At the end of WII the Japanese people actually jumped off of cliffs to avoid the American occupation because of the fear filled lies they were fed about the American military.
Fear is a forceful tool of liars in need of money and power.

(8,556 posts)Could be a border militia and it could be the gangs/cartels. The latter are far more numerous and responsible for far more violence, so logic would dictate that they are the prime suspects. But there's just no way to know with the information we have here. It could also be something else entirely that we're not even considering.
Hopefully the people who did this, whoever they are, will be caught.
TheCruces
(224 posts)Arizona is pretty fucking racist about Mexicans. There's really not all that much violence from gangs/cartels north of the border. Look at El Paso. El Paso is a pretty safe city. Juarez is one of the most dangerous cities on the planet and they are right next to each other.
I live in the Borderland so I'm more familiar with the situation than somebody in Ohio would be.
nadinbrzezinski
(154,021 posts)Also as I pointed above cartels/ coyotes don't wear cammo.
RZM
(8,556 posts)Only the tiniest percentage of them go around killing people because of it. The cartels, however, are a different story.
From what I know, cartel violence is relatively rare this side of the border. But so are random militia murders. It would be interesting to catalog documented instances of both in the border region. I'll be the former, rare as they are, still outnumber the latter.
But hey, I wouldn't put it past some racist nutjob to do this. I just don't think there's any evidence of that so far. It could have been anybody.
Also, I do think it should be mentioned that many people here are always hoping that the perpetrators of violence turn out to be right wingers, because it confirms their world view. This fuels a lot of predictions and conjecture that turn out to be false. Just recently such predictions were made with the Giffords shooting, the Toulouse murders, and now the Iraqi woman in Califorina. In the first two cases, the predictions didn't pan out and it looks like they might not in the third as well.
Hopefully we'll find out here one way or another. I care less about who the killers were and more that they be found and removed from the streets, whoever they are.
TheCruces
(224 posts)I'm saying this because I live on the border and I actually understand the realities of the situation more than somebody in Ohio does.
RZM
(8,556 posts)How many RW racist militia members have murdered immigrants in the southwest in recent years? I can think of one major case, though I'm sure there have been more.
Then compare that to the number of drug/cartel/coyote murders in the southwest during in the same period. I don't know how many of those there have been either, but I'm pretty sure the number is higher than zero.
That would probably be the best way to make a prediction about who did this. Absent that data, we're really just guessing. My personal suspicion is that the cartels are slightly more likely to be responsible, but I just can't know that. I wouldn't be surprised if it was either group.
Without the data, I just don't see how your opinion is more valid or your prediction is more likely. Yes you live down there and you know that there is a lot of racism. But it's not like that's a secret to everybody else.

(27,711 posts)And I was told that calling such an act a "human-hunting bill" was outrageous and that there isn't a problem with right-wing extremists in Arizona, that to suppose as such was Arizona bashing, that things like this don't happen often, and that such a measure is justified by the attacks of smugglers on Arizonans.

(53,339 posts)Bill to establish armed, state militia passes hurdle
by Yvonne Wingett Sanchez - Mar. 14, 2012 09:05 PM
The Republic | azcentral.com
State legislation proposing to establish an armed, volunteer militia to patrol the Arizona-Mexico border for undocumented immigrants and drug traffickers will be debated by the full House.
Senate Bill 1083, which would create and fund an Arizona Special Missions Unit, advanced Wednesday through the House Military Affairs and Public Safety Committee on a party-line 6-3 vote after lengthy debate. The bill next goes to the Appropriations Committee, then to the Rules Committee for vetting, then to the floor of the House for a debate and vote.
...
When called into duty, unit members could detain and arrest suspects until a law-enforcement agency took over and would have immunity for acts that occur while on duty -- similar to immunity granted to police and other law enforcers that prevents prosecution while doing their jobs.
