4. While I agree with your basic premise

that it is a systemic problem and the "divide and conquer" issue of turning it into a racial issue is a valid concern, we still need to acknowledge and do something about the fact that race plays a huge role. We need to find ways to address it on both levels which starts (for me) with keeping an "and" in there. It is a racial AND systemic problem. Reversing the militarization of the police is not going to end stop and frisk. Both sides need to be addressed at the same time ... because history suggests that the benefits to addressing systemic issues take longer to reach minority populations (I'm thinking of things like gendered income disparity - black women still make less than white women even though women's wages overall have risen). Racial inequality in law enforcement and justice is at epidemic levels and minority communities can't and shouldn't have to wait for the benefits to reach them.

13. It's not just about black men, and I don't think sheshe2 meant to imply as such.

In fact, I as a black woman, believe that black women are treated as totally invisible by society. In many ways, that is much worse. And if I'm being honest, the black community always expects that black women will be on the front lines marching against injustice against black men. We sometimes wonder where they are when black women are abused, beaten, rape, missing or killed. Actually, we wonder where EVERYONE is, especially the white feminists who claim to care so much about women's issues. Where are they when black women are mistreated? Yeah, I know Anita Hill, but that was really about Clarence Thomas in my view, not really about her, which she writes so eloquently about in her book. That's probably one of the few things I actually agree with her on.

35. when civil rights are violated minority groups are usually the group that suffers the most

the ptb use them to see how far they can go,then they spread those abuses to other groups

look at occupy,it had huge numbers of white protesters, it did not stop the military style police from pepper spraying them, tear gassing them, crackin heads....every civil rights abuse affects ALL of us because eventually the same tactics will be used on every sub group of the 99%...unless we unite

6. If that story is even true.

I read the cigars cost $48. Is that worth a human life? That cop shot down a young man like an animal. His hands were over his head and he was shot repeatedly. Ten times is what I read.

Iím tired of White people and the Media pretending that there isnít a war on Black people

Ferguson Police shoots unarmed black kid 10 times
Posted on August 9, 2014 by SouthernGirl2

WTFF? Itís open season on young black boys in America. Shot 10 times? Did he empty his clip? A hunter doesnít shoot a lion 10 times.

snip

When Black people bring up the obvious racial component of this against the Black community by law enforcement, White people always want to diminish it, and disregard our valid feelings about it.

12. K&R!! Even The Onion in its own satirical prose, gets it...

http://www.theonion.com/articles/tip...ck-teen,36697/

Quote:

With riots raging in Ferguson, MO following the shooting death by police of an unarmed African-American youth, the nation has turned its eyes toward social injustice and the continuing crisis of race relations. Here are The Onionís tips for being an unarmed black teen in America:

1) Shy away from dangerous, heavily policed areas.

2) Avoid swaggering or any other confident behavior that suggests you are not completely
subjugated.

3) Be sure not to pick up any object that could be perceived by a police officer as a firearm, such as a cell phone, a food item, or nothing.

4) Explain in clear and logical terms that you do not enjoy being shot, and would prefer that it not happen.

5) Donít let society stereotype you as a petty criminal. Remember that you can be seen as so much more, from an armed robbery suspect, to a rape suspect, to a murder suspect.

6)Try to see it from a police officerís point of view: You may be unarmed, but youíre also black.

7)Avoid wearing clothing associated with the gang lifestyle, such as shirts and pants.

8)Revel in the fact that by simply existing, you exert a threatening presence over the nationís police force.

9) Be as polite and straightforward as possible when police officers are kicking the shit out of you.

----

No one will ever shut me up on this issue.

Thank you so much sheshe2!!

Those two pics in your sig line are a powerful reminder of how far we have NOT come.

Do you really believe that most of the young victims fail to grasp this?

I suppose citizens should also have a right to use force if they feel threatened, especially if they are threatened by sidewalks, Skittles or a can of tea.

40. Because cops use excessive force all the time against young men of color who, in many cases, aren't

even doing anything illegal. And then we have (usually white) folks popping up saying, "Well he shouldn't have blah blah blah" as if mere rudeness or uncooperativeness - or sometimes, simply walking down the street - warrants being shot multiple times.

34. Since when does walking down the middle of the street away from the sidewalk

"threaten" people? The only one "threatened" was the fucking cop who decided to respond to this alleged threat on his alleged manhood with bullets. No one in the community called him to remove the "threat" of Michael Brown or his friend. He took it upon himself to neutralize the horrendous, blood curdling "threat" of two men walking in the middle of the street.

You are a fool.

30. I Surrender

I'm a 51 year old white guy. I confess I had no idea it is as bad as it is for my countrymen in black communities.

We all need to make these issues voting issues and get these racists out of our lives! The fact that white folks are ignorant is a huge part of the problem...

I am truly sorry that I have allowed myself to be blinded. This institutional racism must STOP!

I am DEVASTATED by the notion that how people are policed depends on race.

WTF is wrong with these politicians and cops? People are people! Kids are kids! If they wanted to get Michael Brown on the sidewalk they should have talked to him like he was their son! WTF!!!!!!!!!!!!?

We all are "disappointed" that our young ones do not behave as adults at times.....but we DO NOT kill them in response!!! WTF!!!!!!?

I can't believe we are here in 2014....I hope and pray our kids vote these racists out in the coming years....

I apologize for my ignorance...my best wishes to Michael Brown's family. My hope for them is that the loss of their son can be an instrument for positive change.......

42. They aren't just targeting african americans, other races are being targeted as well.

The picture says that black lives matter, but I have to ask - do #mexicanlivesmatter?

Anyway, while I'll agree that race is the main determinate in who they are attacking, it's only because we have given them the... well, courage, to do so. We've stood back, refused to hold them accountable, allowed them to become more and more militarized, and now that they believe the people to be cowards they are starting to lash out.

They are targeting other races now because no one has bothered holding them accountable for lesser offenses again them in the past. It doesn't justify their actions, but the people deserve some of the blame for letting it get as bad as it is.
