(35,954 posts)Involving unions to negotiate on behalf of their members is a good thing. The alternative of individual work agreements is a terrible thing...

I would ask, "Exactly how does eliminating their collective bargaining rights improve anything?"

(62,265 posts)You cannot become a police officer if you have a high IQ or any remotely intelligent background.

(29 posts)That sounds suspiciously like something pulled out of tumblr that folks use to make themselves feel better.
Double points for the superlative as well.

(29 posts)However, I didn't read anything that gave me the impression that it was policy at every police department let alone every law enforcement agency.

(62,265 posts)So it's very much likely the policy everywhere. You spend $100k training people, you don't want it to be wasted on higher intelligence who are more likely to quit, simple.
The problem is that they should be going after higher intelligence, people who know the law, at least, back and forth for a given state. But no, that would risk having a high turnaround.
The easiest way to prevent a high turnaround is to increase pay.

(29 posts)That specific department has/had that policy and some others may as well.
Many other departments are extremely competitive, both during the initial hiring and as the move up the ladder begins.
The idea that only dumb people can be cops is broad brush, obviously incorrect and hyperbolic to say the least. That is something someone says to make themselves feel better and superior.

(62,265 posts)I am probably biased, but I never met an officer I thought was very bright. I've never met one police officer who knew the laws that they were supposed to enforce, for example. During protest I have been able to get out of every single arrest (except for kettling in which case the charges were dropped) by simply announcing the relevant statutes. I could've been talking out of my ass, but they didn't appear to even know what was going on.
It's not "only dumb people." Cops are above average on test scores, the point is that they actively discourage far above average. Which they should instead be encouraging.

(89,175 posts)Why so many come off as idiots .
joshcryer
(62,265 posts)They justify it because of more intelligent people "becoming bored" with the job and quitting, costing taxpayers money for training the individual and then having them quit. This same justification is used with the last in first out policy in teachers. More effective teachers get kicked out because they are more likely to move on from teaching.

so it just shows how bad zimmerman must be that even with all the shitty cops around he still sucks too much to make it there.
