America is a Horror Show

...David Simon, journalist and creator of the TV series The Wire and Treme, talks with Bill about the crisis of capitalism in America. After President Barack Obama’s annual State of the Union address, it’s a reality check from someone who artfully uses television drama to report on the state of America from an entirely different perspective — the bottom up.

“The horror show is we are going to be slaves to profit. Some of us are going to be higher on the pyramid and we’ll count ourselves lucky and many many more will be marginalized and destroyed,” Simon tells Moyers. He blames a “purchased” Congress for failing America’s citizens, leading many of them to give up on politics altogether.

We even, as a society, commit the standard error: "Hey, we're being stalked by a madman with an axe! LET'S SPLIT UP!"

When he says that "it was when labor and business were fighting that it worked well."

I see it a bit differently. To me it was "when labor and business had equal degrees of power," because we weren't always fighting. I was in the IBEW for years, and later the Teamsters, and only rarely did we have to resort to strikes to arrive at contracts. The grocery union in Southern California has reached contract the last two times without fighting, because the union has enough power and not too much. There is a balance.

His basic point, however, is absolutely correct. The destruction of unionism has been a disaster for the working class.

for a country and people with such potential, it is being squandered at an alarming rate. The innate flaws of human beings - desire for war, greed, power, pettiness, jealousy, dishonesty - is never more apparent.
