(11,856 posts)The LRAD 500X-RE, the model that appears to have been present at the Ferguson demonstration, achieves maximum sound projection and penetration beyond 2,000 meters and can reach 149 decibels. The 500X-RE gives law enforcement the ability to issue clear, authoritative verbal commands, followed with powerful deterrent tones. And according to a report by the Economist in 2004, those deterrent tones cause immediate headaches and pain. Since LRADs can blast above a persons 120-decibel discomfort mark, and their 130-decibel threshold for potential hearing loss, theres no telling what the consequences of encountering a LRAD may be for protesters. One woman sued the city of Pittsburgh for permanent damage caused by an LRAD. And the Missouri Department of Transportation purchased two LRADs in April, though it's unclear if they are the same ones used in Ferguson.
LRADs may look like dopey satellite dishes, but the SWAT teams in Ferguson on Wednesday definitely brought out the big guns when they turned on the deterrent tones. Not to mention their actual guns.

(62,269 posts)ie, they were kettled (they only way to "not disperse" is to be locked in by groups of police).
Live and Learn
(12,769 posts)At least OWS had plenty of them? I heard they were around Ferguson but not much about it.
joshcryer
(62,269 posts)You enter or leave that zone you get arrested trying to get there and trying to leave. If reporters couldn't even film what do you think they'd to do ACLU advisers? Those poor guys will get time. Some may even have priors and have even more trouble looming.
ACLU advisers (generally lawyers who knew their civil rights laws) were able to get kettled occupiers freed on several occasions (without incident).

They are ever-present at civil disobedience events, rallies, they were at many OWS sites.
I doubt they were able to be present at the scene of these arrests given the crowd disbursal and apparent kettling, or if they were, they were probably arrested too. Regardless, while they often try to mediate conflicts between protestors and cops (deescalate) they aren't really able to stop arrests but they can help with legal services after the fact.
THey are a pretty remarkable group, if you are interested I would suggest googling. (I say this as a recommendation -- based on my own experiences at protests/civil disobedience I think they are awesome. I don't want my post to come across as being all like 'google it yourself' or something, I don't mean it that way at all)

(62,269 posts)In all honesty they were trapped in the media staging area because cops escorted them there to begin with. The cops are trying to handle the narrative and keep the media from reporting on the ground. They got in there, saw there was nothing to report on, and started to leave. Then they found the bus and were escorted yet again back to the media staging area.
This is insane. I bet the cop follows them out.

(62,269 posts)I just know guy in the truck was cracking up about the ladies following them. He pulled up to that other police officer and told him "it's those girls again, haha, better go chew them out for pulling this crap." That's how it had to have gone down because there's no reason for that cop to go harass them.
They were simply following the guy in the trucks' instructions, following him, as they were told to do. In fact, the camera lady said "do we have to follow him? Let's just go down the street" and Sarah insisted that they had to follow. It's infuriating.
Live and Learn
