The Sleazy War on the Humane Society

In recent weeks, riders of Washington, D.C.’s metro system have seen a parade of posters inside trains that make shocking allegations about the nation’s best-known animal rights group, the Humane Society of the United States.

Featuring a baleful-looking caged dog, the ads accuse the Humane Society of giving only a tiny portion of its revenue to animal shelters and using donor money to pay employee pensions and the cost of a settling a racketeering case.

“That’s interesting, because you often hear about seemingly worthwhile organizations that are not,” said one rider on his morning commute, when asked about the poster by a reporter. “I wonder who is putting up the ads and how factual they are?”

OP NOTE: I have donated and volunteered for the humane Society and have never seen any shenanigans with their accounting! Rule of thumb..I prefer the company of animals to humans. Dogs won't fool around behind you back, steal your money or ever ask for alimony. ...AND...if you get bitten, you definitely had it coming. We have had 30 + rescues over the years, currently have 3 and like the adage goes: "I saved one dog and it did not change the world, but surely, the world changed for that one dog."

1. Berman is a huge shill for anyone anti-animal

And often creates lies to get his point across. He's been going after PETA for years and a lot of the misinformation about PETA that people spout come directly from Berman's sites or PR campaigns for the food industry.

I find it amazing that he attacks HSUS for basically paying its non-profit employees, as though their employees (or PETA's) should work for nothing while his non-profit employees reap the benefits of his sleazy campaigns.

4. You missed the point...

I'm not talking about random animal attacks. That's going to occur. I am talking about in all my years , and dogs and cats knowing that I'm not a threat, I have been bitten...twice. average of once every 30 years. Not a random dog bite. That being said, i have seen kids hurt animals, unknowing ly, even family pets and these dogs and cats will bite to protect themselves. So would I. I'm standing with the animals.

3. reputable charities

Without wading through that long article, since I have to leave, I will just note that there are organizations that evaluate charities based on things like how much of their income goes to their purpose and how much to inflated salaries and so on. That's the first place I would look if I had doubts about someplace.

I donate to animal charities, but to my local ones as I know how they are run, and to one national wildlife preservation one that I have checked on carefully.

I stopped donating to HSUS some years ago. I forget why, but they did something I was against like supporting testing on animals. I am not sure that was the issue, I don't remember.
