She crossed the rainbow bridge Friday at 2:51 pm. I'm crushed. She was my boo boo girl.
When we got Sugar I wasn't ready for another dog. I'd just lost my 3 year old Boxer to a seizure. I tried to stay neutral not fall head over heels in love with her. At first she kinda made that easy. She tried my patience ALL. THE. TIME. But then she would look at me with those eyes and I was done.
We bonded and Sugar stopped trying my patience and became my friend. Then my world was turned upside down and we had to find Sug a home. We were moving and our house needed a lot of work so we were staying with my parents while we did the work. I couldn't take Sug because they had 4 small dogs; one with medical problems. I didn't want to keep her locked up in a crate-that wouldn't have been fair to her. So we found her a great home with other dogs and lots of land to run on. I was heartbroken.
Fast forward 6 months. We were in our house and had gotten another dog. We were sitting on the deck on a Saturday evening and I asked my husband what he would say if the people called and asked if we wanted Sug back. Of course we would take her in a heart beat. The next morning the phone rang...Sugar came home on Sunday. She was back where she belonged...she was home. Crazy right?
Sugar & our new puppy Izzie were buddies right from the start. The dynamic duo.
It happened so fast. I noticed she was drinking a lot more than usual and eating a lot more. Then she started having accidents (she NEVER had accidents) and I noticed she wasn't walking right. She couldn't manage the steps. I took her to the vet lab work was done and xrays. She had a brain tumor that was very aggressive and progressed very quickly. It was just two weeks and she couldn't even stand to eat.
Not a month ago she was out running with me.
Sugar was my dog. I spent everyday with her, she followed wherever I went.
She was the sweetest most gentle dog in the world. She was my friend, my confidant, my sweet baby girl. Her eyes were so full of love. I miss her so so much. I keep looking for her to be there. To wiggle at me....something..but she's gone and I'm so heartbroken.
I want to hold her again. I can still feel her in my arms. I will miss her soft tongue giving me a kiss as I bend down to wipe her paws.
This one was Friday morning. I'm sure Izzie was saying goodbye.

(65 posts)I just went through it myself with my Sassy the Friday before.
My wife and I rescued her from abuse in '01 and we had her together until '06 when my wife died of cancer.
Sassy held me together....she was my "girl". I had her for 13 of her 16 yrs.
You are in my thoughts and prayers. Rest well Sugar.

(5,376 posts)Your user name reflects how special she was to you. I can only hope she and my Cammy-dog, whose loss I still grieve, were there to greet Sugar at the other side of the Rainbow Bridge. What a wonderful thing that would be!
Blessings.

(15,214 posts)I can tell that Sugar was loved, and that makes my heart sing! It's so hard to lose them. I've been there many times, but I deal with a lot of rescue animals, and I always have to stop for a moment and just be thankful when I know that one has had a good home.
Thank you for loving her and taking care of her. I'm sorry that she's gone, and I'm sorry that it hurts. It hurts because you CARE so much.
Please give Izzie an extra hug for me, and I wish you, in time, peace and comfort.

(7,499 posts)Losing a beloved pet is like losing a member of the family...it's a special kind of hell. I lost my twelve and a half year old bichon, "Boo Boo Bear" a year and nine months ago and I miss him like crazy. Just thinking of him makes me smile, and my eyes to fill with tears. He was my angel. You never get over the loss, but it does get bearable.
You, your family and dear Izzie will be in my thoughts and prayers.

(16,296 posts)in the shadows sometime - barely tolerated me and hated everyone else. Grief is deeper when it comes from the loss of something that was part of your everyday life - the vacuum it creates is often irreconcilable to the life that continues.

(10,726 posts)Its so hard losing our furry kids. I've lost so many over the last few years, all rescues that found their way to us, and into our hearts. I'm so glad Izzie is there for you. When you are ready, you may want to consider adding another to your family, another friend for Izzie. I have no doubt that the right little one will find its way to you, when your heart is ready. Sending lots of hugs your way---

(12,151 posts)Beautiful dog. I know a boxer person, and she recently lost one to cancer, with similar symptoms, although it was in another part of the body. She's active with a local rescue org and always has two or three adoptees in the house.

(80,693 posts)Sugar has lots of friends upstairs, for sure. Probably busy getting acquainted with, and playing with, them all! (Well, the other dogs anyway.)
That's who I hope I meet when I cross over, myself. All the critters I loved in my life, who went before me.
Hugs and prayers and gentle thoughts to you, dear friend.

(6,335 posts)or any small dog / breed really.
I was watching Micky Rourke on Jimmy Kimmel the other night who asked him about his famous chihuahuas.
He always had German Sheps but they lived to only 9 or 10 and was devasted every time so he switched to chihuahuas which live much longer to 16-18 yrs old--unless they are neglected and/or fed people food etc.
Basic rule is the larger the dog the shorter their life span. Mixed breeds also are healthier as they dont have any inbred problems like most purebreds do. Boxers get cancer a lot I heard.

(3,431 posts)I took in a standard poodle (at 6 years) from the shelter. I had to put her down, when she was 17. Yes, a very long life. The other dog, a Boxer cried and cried. At my age I did not want another dog feeling that I could not do justice to it. My Boxer started acting like a stuffed animal and kept crying. I am sure that Izzie feels the same way now. So I caved. As soon as I got a 2 year old std poodle for him, he was in heaven again. I still miss my old poodle, but my Boxer is happy now.
One of my Boxers some years ago had the same problem as your Sugar, It was so hard to do the right thing, so I know exactly how you feel. It happened when "Drake" was only 6 years old and no operation was possible.
So it is time for you now to spend extra time with Izzie as a consolation to both of you, and I hope it will work better for your Boxer than it did for mine.
Best wishes!

one voice, I am so sorry about Sugar. She was beautiful. It's so damn painful to lose these incredible beings with whom we are blessed enough to share our lives. My own soul mate was a dog. The best comfort is knowing Sug was so loved and you were lucky enough to have the honor.
