They just riot for stupid reasons - namely, their team winning a championship.

(16,286 posts)A Trayvon and a Davis and a Brown, and thousands more, for the white people to burn down the entire country, it would take one incident like that and you would not be able to put out the fire for years.
White people have proven that to us lately, just watch how they react when they think a Brown person might be getting preferential treatment over something
Again, I am white...so if you dont like what I have to say about white people, take it up with the wall and talk to it...

(9,895 posts)White people are just as likely as anyone else - black, brown, yellow, green, etc. - to lash out with violence and lawlessness. They are also far more likely to be overtly aggrieved about minor transgressions due to an over-developed sense of entitlement
The plan for the 1% seems pretty clear to me...experiment on the black population (kettling, tear gas versus smoke, rubber bullets versus noise, curfew versus overt intimidation) before having to deploy the military tactics against the rest of the 99% on a wider scale. Get the kinks out now, on what they view as surplus humanity by their repetitive actions and lack of compassion, and then have the suppression system worked out pretty well when its needed for the dumb-asses currently championing the police behavior in "counter-protests" in St. Louis.
Its never a problem to some people until its in their front yard or on their streets. What's going on now are the opening salvos of the coming war of the 1% versus the rest of us in the next 10-15 years. They have their mercenaries and weapons and are field testing them now...

(16,286 posts)it is important to remember that in specific and unusual circumstances like Occupy, yes the cops go after anybody and everybody regardless of race or religion, Gay or str8t, etc.
But the African American community and I suppose Latino community to a lesser respect deal with being targeted all day, everyday, in almost every town and city in America.
If one Black man and 200 white men walk into a "Barney's" clothing store, I bet the Black guy gets followed and the 200 white guys dont.
Just as an example.

(9,895 posts)Society is conditioned by the media, especially by the television and film industries, to reflexively fear things through associations and false equivalencies. Case in point - young black men are immediately considered a "threat" because of the standard APB that hits the evening news "police are seeking a suspect, black, 18-45, medium build wearing a white tee shirt and jeans" (which only describes about 75% of ALL black men in a given area)....the way Americans are kept constantly afraid, constantly armed and constantly worrying about "the other" is all part of the wider mechanism of societal control exerted over the population by the oligarchs who have usurped power.
They own the factories, mills, mines and farmlands.
They sent all the jobs overseas to avoid paying fair wages (consistent with the rise in productivity)...
They sent all the profits overseas to avoid paying taxes (even though corporate tax rates are at historic lows since the 30's)
They bought the politicians decades ago....
They bought the judges and courts as well...
The police are nothing more than their yapping attack dogs, barely leashed at times...
TV and radio from the right keep about 40% of the total population vitriolically afraid of the black population (and really anyone not just like them, though the blacks are easier targets to start with).

(38,613 posts)Full Definition of RACISM
1: a belief that race is the primary determinant of human traits and capacities and that racial differences produce an inherent superiority of a particular race
2: racial prejudice or discrimination
http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/racist
It's absurd to claim that only white people can be racist. I've known PLENTY of non-white racists. Non-whites don't experience nearly as much as definition #2 above, but saying that non-white people can't be racist is so out-there that it deserves a sarcasm icon.

(9,895 posts)I am talking about institutionalized racism - things where a store owner who has NEVER been robbed, yet would still follow the black customers more closely than white ones, even though statistically speaking you are more likely to have a white shoplifter in your establishment than a black one.
If a store owner is in a specific area and having specific crimes occur, there is a difference. If you are in a an area of high crime and taking a lot of losses from theft, then your views and policies may be changed and certainly influenced by that experience.
But if you look at the overall picture, many times it is not the experience of being robbed that causes this kind of profiling...its irrational fear or outright racism baked into the system in general. Its suburban mall shop owners or rural businesses that may have one black customer a month or even in a year... Its an attitude and a behavior that is not learned by experience but by false experience and undue influences. Media says black teens are criminals, ignorant or bigoted store owners buy it and then profile their customers as a result - EVEN IF THEY HAVE NOT BEEN ROBBED OR STOLEN FROM. This is a real phenomenon and really at the heart of the problem. Whites like myself NEVER face a store owner's sideways looks and assumptions of crime...that kind of thinking - irrational, non-reality based - feeds into society and poisons race relations.
It also gets extended to police officers and their treatment of minorities, especially in black-majority neighborhoods with white police. These cops riding around on a power trip going off like hair-triggers has a lot in common with the irrational store owners way of thinking. If you view everyone as a potential threat, you are FAR more likely to use excessive force (shoot now and justify later).
I think its disingenuous to not think that broader social attitudes do not affect the way people see things - I can't speak for everyone obviously, but I believe this tragedy in Ferguson has opened my eyes to things in a way that I never considered too much just 10 days ago...

(24,544 posts)White people of ALL economic classes have been "experimenting" on black/non white people since this fucking country was founded. This whole 1% vs. 99% when it comes to racial matters is ignorant BS that TRULY needs to stop. It wasn't wealthy white folks that lynched my great uncle which almost killed my great grandmother. It was dirt poor whites.
It wasn't rich whites that denied my mother (and even me on ocassion) jobs regardless of how qualified she was. It was middle class whites. It's not just rich whites tossing black kids out of schools, pulling us over ever five minutes for nothing, making us the number one recipient of hate crimes above ANY OTHER GROUP.
Alot of the hate in this country is not caused by the rich and never has been. This is RACISM at its ugliest rawest form. And all of the "it's the oligarchs' fault!!" idiocy does is absolve every day white people of their responsibility in helping end this cancer that has plagued our country since Day 1.

and see how many more were terrorism against people of color than were caused by people of color. (Hint: there have been many more race riots against people of color than by.) And then the difference between the two is striking too. White people riot to enforce white supremacy. People of color riot out of frustration with being victims of white supremacy.

(9,748 posts)The Chicago police department did something really weird. They interviewed everybody arrested that first championship asking them where they were when the game ended, how they ended up rioting, etc.
Next year they immediately closed every interstate entering the city the moment the Bulls won. The next 5 championships that the Bulls won resulted in no rioting.
Turns out, the rioters were not inner city African-Americans. They were overwhelmingly White suburbanites who came into the city to tear up the place after the game. They weren't even in the city watching the game to celebrate if the Bulls won! They waited until after the Bulls won and then came in to riot.
That is a fascinating story.

(32,723 posts)The belief by a LOT of whites is that blacks are little more than trained monkeys that will go back to their animal nature unless you keep them on a tight leash. Disgusting, but that's the attitude. More so than the attitude they had about Native Americans.
Native Americans were seen as "primitive" but blacks weren't even seen as human. They were animals like horses or cows.

(621 posts)term "resistance" (keeping in mind Mao's aphorism that "all oppression breeds resistance" . It's not yet a revolution, more an insurrectionary moment, but the ghosts of the Communards of 1870 Paris are stirring and, I think, perhaps starting to smile.
To quote the Rude Pundit's brilliant essay today:
Let us say, and why not, that starting last week, large groups of armed black men and women blockaded the roads to their neighborhood in Ferguson, Missouri. Let us say, and, indeed, why not, that those armed African-Americans said that they were sick and tired of being bullied by the government in the form of the police, with the killing of Michael Brown being the last straw, the one that broke the motherfuckin' camel's back.
And maybe they would declare that they were engaged in an act of civil disobedience against government overreach, that they had the right to walk the streets without being constantly subject to government interference in their daily lives. Perhaps the leaders of the protest would declare that God told them to stand up to the authorities. Perhaps they'd even say that they don't recognize the legitimacy of the police force. Perhaps they'd demand a restoration of government welfare programs that have been cut. Perhaps African-Americans from other cities would show up, armed, to join the Ferguson residents in defiance.
Then, let's say, and, remember, we're still in the realm of fantasy here, just having fun, you know, that a group of law enforcement officers, maybe cops, maybe state troopers, showed up with their armed vehicles and pointed their guns at the protesters. And then the protesters pointed all their guns back, declaring that they were willing to die, that they were making a stand and no one was going to get them to end it or take away their guns.
What would happen? Would law enforcement back down? Would they drive their BearCats back to the station? Would they lower their weapons and leave? Would senators stand with the Ferguson rebels? Would Fox "news" invite them on to praise their attack on a government gone mad?
Or would the cops just fucking waste them because they aren't white ranchers like Cliven Bundy, wanting free shit from the government? Hell, look what the cops are doing now and the Ferguson protesters have done nothing remotely as violent or threatening as the Bundy ranch assholes.
As for the Tea Party and the NRA, all those brave people who stand for "freedom" have pretty much scattered like fleas on an itchy dog and run when it comes time to oppose actual violence, not just playing cowboy. Freedom ain't free, but it sure is white.
