Obama Speaks Carefully So That He Doesn’t Prejudice The Federal Ferguson Investigation

By: Jason Easley
Monday, August, 18th, 2014, 5:31 pm

President Obama showed his commitment to seeing that justice is done in Ferguson by sending Attorney General Eric Holder to the scene and doing everything in his power not to prejudice the investigation during his White House remarks.

snip

The president said, “Obviously, we’ve seen events in which there is a big gulf between community perceptions and law enforcement perceptions around the country. This is not something new. It’s always tragic when it involves the death of someone so young. I have to be very careful about not prejudging these events before investigations are completed, because although these are issues of local jurisdiction, the DoJ works for me, and when they are conducting an investigation I’ve got make sure that I don’t look like I am putting my thumb on the scales one way or the other. So it’s hard for me to address a specific case beyond making sure that it’s conducted in a way that is transparent, where there’s accountability, where people can trust the process. Hoping that as a consequence of a fair and just process, you end up with a fair and just outcome.”

Because of the DoJ investigation, the president can’t publicly reveal his true feelings on the death of Michael Brown and the actions of the Ferguson Police. A fair and just process is one of the keys to restoring peace to Ferguson. A feeling of injustice is the driving force behind people taking to the streets. Stability and peace will return to the community when the residents believe that justice is being done.

The local authorities have demonstrated that they have an agenda. They are actively trying to smear Michael Brown in order to justify the actions of their police department. This is a case that has to be handled by the federal government because officials in Ferguson have proven that they can’t be trusted. President Obama will someday be free to speak his mind, but that time is not now.

http://www.politicususa.com/2014/08/18/obama-speaks-carefully-prejudice-federal-ferguson-investigation.html

Some here believe that this president is weak on Ferguson. I guess we need the macho response of, hmmm... Bush maybe swooping down on an aircraft carrier. Or maybe standing on top of the rubble of the twin towers with a bull horn. I call bullshit on those claims.

As NYC_SKP said,

Sometimes the quietest one in the room is the smartest one.

And sometimes the quiet one in the room is the real leader.

The man doesn't please everyone; he never could and, to his credit, he doesn't even try.

But that never means he isn't working on it, having others work on it, making things happen in the background or waiting for the best time to act.

this is going to be real bad...

in the armed forces, the court ruled for the defense that Obama had prejudiced the trial and the man got off, even though Obama had not said anything about that particular case. So the guy got away with it.

No one wants to see justice denied in this or any other matter. Obama is wise to speak softly and has the long range goal in mind, not making some political points.

I don't miss his crude shows of bravado. My idea of leadership doesn't include wasting time to answer a pack of hounds paid to lie. Who've been answered, then caught editing and lying more.

The calls for 'balls' and 'a pair' require an authoritarian figure. Shows of bravado are for those who don't realize they are the source of democratic power and are crying for rescue.

I didn't vote for that, I'm tired of the game by media who want a 'strong man' to make a show. Screw that.

The narrative has been for a few years that he " hates white people". There has been no condemnation from the IndieTeaPublican leadership - so in that case . . . Silence is NOT golden.

In this case, it is. I tried explaining to someone at DU this weekend that this President and AG have to proceed with caution. Because the IndieTeaPublucan leadership has let the worst of the meme stand - they must proceed with caution.

I will be sad the day President Obama leaves office.
I will be thrilled six months later when his memoir comes out.

And his Presidential Library? I will donate money for a specific display - the one that shows the images of the hatefulness he has endured. I want the witch doctor picture in that display. It's up there with the little kids at the lynching picture 90 some odd years ago.

It's a slice of imagery that shows a segment of Americans as they were.

Mon Aug 18, 2014, 11:56 PM
Aug 2014

WASHINGTON (AP) — Calling for a sharp separation between the nation's armed forces and local police, President Barack Obama on Monday urged a re-examination of programs that have equipped civilian law enforcement departments with military gear from the Pentagon.

The transfers have come under public scrutiny after the forceful police response to racially charged unrest in Ferguson, Missouri.

Amid video images of well-armed police confronting protesters with combat weapons and other surplus military equipment, Obama said it would be useful to review how local law enforcement agencies have used federal grants that permit them to obtain heavier armaments.

"There is a big difference between our military and our local law enforcement, and we don't want those lines blurred," Obama told reporters at the White House. "That would be contrary to our traditions."

how strikingly gray his hair has turned. He definitely does NOT look like he interrupted a vacation to go back to the office. He looks like he interrupted a long hard day of bending over, wrangling crowds of kids, and pulling weeds in Michelle's White House garden. He looks exhausted. He looks like he REALLY needs an actual day off with a hot bath, some soft music, and a massage. On a heated massage table. I find it such a sad thing - the ridiculous amount of weight he carries every day.

I remember reading about Harry Truman after he got the shocking news that FDR had just died - making him President.

“Harry Truman has come to be regarded as one of America’s outstanding national leaders of the twentieth century. In the spring of 1945, however, this decent, simple, impulsive man was all but overwhelmed by the burden of office thrust upon him by Roosevelt’s death on 12 April. ‘I felt like the moon, the stars and all the planets had fallen on me,’ he told reporters on the afternoon that he was sworn in. ‘Boys, if you ever pray, pray for me now.’ One journalist said: ‘Good luck, Mr. President.’ Truman said: ‘I wish you didn’t have to call me that.’”

Tue Aug 19, 2014, 06:21 AM
Aug 2014

Decades ago, on the way to a junior college history class, someone jostled me in the hallway and my front upper partial (result of a VN War injury) popped off. I repaired to the men's room to try to fix it. Took me a while, but I finally wedged it back on by stuffing a little TP in.

When I got to class, the prof stopped in the middle of his lecture to demand an explanation for my tardiness. I was too ashamed to try to explain, so I just muttered that I forgot the time. After some more abuse from the prof I was able to take my seat.

I was mortified, humiliated, angry. With our mid-tem exam coming up, I figured that was how I would SHOW HIM!

I studied my ass off and even showed up on campus at 5am, hours before the exam, to go over my notes once again.

On the day the exam results were in, the prof announced that this was only the first or second time in his long years of teaching that he had a student get a perfect score on one of his exams. And he proceeded to walk down the aisle to plop my perfect paper on my desk.

Afterward, I had a lot of classmates coming up to ask if they could study with me.

But if it hadn't been for that prof putting m on the spot and humiliating me in front of the class, I never would have aced his exam. All because of my damn teeth!

You need to listen very carefully to what the President has said on Ferguson and try READING his statement as well. President Obama is a man of action and few words. If you listened carefully, the President had FBI/Civil Rights division in Ferguson almost as soon as Michael Brown's body hit the ground. The DOJ civil rights division investigates HATE CRIMES. There have been and are 40 FBI agents in Ferguson conducting a CIVIL RIGHTS criminal investigation. A civil rights criminal investigation is not about the method of death of Michael Brown. It is the context and state of mind of his murderer, e.g. Darren Wilson that is the focus of the investigation. The DOJ would only be investigating at this level if they already knew something about the killer, Darren Wilson and the Ferguson PD that would make it very very likely that Michael Brown's murder was the result of a hate crime.

66. WHY Obama cannot make any remarks considered prejudical or visit: WILSON WILL WALK!
Tue Aug 19, 2014, 02:57 AM
Aug 2014

Who remembers this? I did and so did Obama:

Judge: Obama sex assault comments unlawful command influence.

Two defendants in military sexual assault cases cannot be punitively discharged, if found guilty, because of “unlawful command influence” derived from comments made by President Barack Obama, a judge ruled in a Hawaii military court this week.

Navy Judge Cmdr. Marcus Fulton ruled during pretrial hearings in two sexual assault cases — U.S. vs. Johnson and U.S. vs. Fuentes — that comments made by Obama as commander in chief would unduly influence any potential sentencing, according to a court documents obtained by Stars and Stripes.

On Wednesday and Thursday, Fulton approved the pretrial defense motions, which used as evidence comments that Obama made about sexual assault at a May 7 news conference:

“The bottom line is: I have no tolerance for this,” Obama said, according to an NBC News story submitted as evidence by defense attorneys in the sexual assault cases.

‘I expect consequences,” Obama added. “So I don’t just want more speeches or awareness programs or training, but ultimately folks look the other way. If we find out somebody’s engaging in this, they’ve got to be held accountable — prosecuted, stripped of their positions, court martialed, fired, dishonorably discharged. Period.”

Continued in article:

http://www.stripes.com/judge-obama-sex-assault-comments-unlawful-command-influence-1.225974

to okaawhatever:

He wasn't talking about Johnson or Fuentes, he was making policy. It was in response and support of a bill to end sexual assaults in the military by not allowing them to be swept under the rug by technicalities, such as how good a soldier they'd been otherwise.

The victim represented by the US never saw justice because of the way that the judge interpreted those words. I think the judge was wrong but that is what happened. So in order to not let that happen again, he cannot visit or say what he thinks on Wilson and all the rest of it.

It's not about him being a coward, not caring, or any of what he's been accused. It's about caring for the victim and his family enough to not have his words used to allow the shooter to escape justice.

His tough talk taken out of context hurt a victim.* Is that not a higher goal than satistfying voyeurs on the net demanding to see him rip into Ferguson PD and the shooter?

Is that cheap thrill worth letting Michael Brown and his community suffer by letting the defense use his words to establish undue influence to free Wilson?

Most of us know damn well that they will. This is a disgrace to talk about a man who is trying to get the best thing done, not go for the political win in the short run and lose the bigger goal of justice.

JMHO!

http://www.democraticunderground.com/10025408241#post108

*Note, he recieved no praise on DU for that tough speech in the interview on his stance, either, only fault finding that there were any rapes going on at all. Obama has two daughters and is called the First Feminist President by some women. Why think he doesn't care?

When Holder will say what Obama will not

"President Obama held a brief press conference in the White House yesterday to address two major topics: developments in Iraq, where there’s been some noticeable progress, and conditions in Ferguson, Missouri. On the former, the president was focused and specific. On the latter, Obama was vague and cautious.

This almost certainly wasn’t an accident. Ezra Klein had a terrific piece yesterday noting many of the reasons the president “won’t give the Ferguson speech his supporters want.” There’s a fair amount to this, much of it having to do with the White House’s belief that Obama’s remarks on racially-charged conflicts tend to make those problems worse."

I love that link to Holder...

But U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder often seems willing to say what Obama won’t. Take yesterday, for example, when the nation’s top federal law-enforcement official made a not-so-subtle jab at local law enforcement in a written statement.

“I realize there is tremendous interest in the facts of the incident that led to Michael Brown’s death, but I ask for the public’s patience as we conduct this investigation. The selective release of sensitive information that we have seen in this case so far is troubling to me. No matter how others pursue their own separate inquiries, the Justice Department is resolved to preserve the integrity of its investigation. This is a critical step in restoring trust between law enforcement and the community, not just in Ferguson, but beyond.”

That was fairly blunt rhetoric under the circumstances, and with Holder traveling to Ferguson tomorrow, one assumes the Attorney General will have some other choice words once on the ground locally.

http://www.msnbc.com/rachel-maddow-show/when-holder-will-say-what-obama-will-not

I need to go back tomorrow and read some of those sub-links, Cha. Thank you, a great read. Truth Cha....facts in black and white for all to read. Sadly some will not.
