currently in place. I'm not justifying or condoning it. Just trying to give a possible explanation.

It was Century City, actually. The police didn't want to grant the protest permit because LBJ was in town giving a speech, but they had no legal reason to deny the permit. They granted us the permit, with the stipulation that we (the parade) had to keep moving. We walked just a couple of blocks when we found the police blocking the march's route. When we were forced to stop by lines of cops, they said by stopping, we violated our march permit. The cops charged 50,000 people and beat the shit out of as many people as they could catch. The streets were littered with the bodies of unconscious or injured protesters.

The media said the protesters started it. The cops haven't changed, and they never will unless they're forced to.

Outright entrapment and instigation by police.

reminds me of this lyric from The Mothers song "Who needs the Peace Corps?"

I will love everyone
I will love the police as they kick the shit out of me on the street

Ten thousand marchers, by most estimates, were assembling across the street from the Century City hotel. Hundreds of nightstick-wielding police--using a parade permit and court order that restricted the marchers from stopping to demonstrate--forceably dispersed them.

44 years later and now they don't need a court order?

After all, their 2nd largest source of income has historically been from court costs/fees. With the Micheal Brown death they might be starting to ball behind last years 24,0000+ issued arrest warrants.

Freedom to Assemble implies that people group together and "assemble" into a crowd in one place...

I do not remember the founding fathers calling for the 'freedom to march'. It is "freedom to 'assemble'" ...

Right?
