Starting this year, minorities will outnumber whites in US public schools

While 62% of the total US population was classified as non-Hispanic white in 2013, when public schools start this fall their racial landscape will reflect a different America.

According to a new report by the National Center for Education (NCES), minorities—Hispanics, Asians, African American, Native Americans, and multiracial individuals—will account for 50.3% of public school students. To break this down by grade levels, minorities will make up 51% of pre-kindergarteners to 8th graders and 48% of 9th to 12th graders.

This change in enrollment comes amidst a growth in the percentage of US-born Hispanics and Asians in the overall population. Between 2012 and 2013, the Hispanic population grew by 2.1% and the Asian population grew by 2.9%. And reflecting these numbers, public schools will see big hikes in Asian and Hispanic students between 2011 and 2022. Hispanic students will rise by 33%, Asian/Pacific Islanders by 20%, multiracial students by 44%, and African-Americans by 2% between 2011 and 2022. Meanwhile the percentage of Caucasians is projected to decrease by 6% and of American Indian/Alaska Natives to decrease by 5%

Maybe this is the only way America will stop prejudice.

I say this as a white woman that many times the minority while in school.

People miss so much not interacting with different nationalities/cultures.

I grew up in a very racially mixed area with people of color in positions like teacher, administrator, guidance counselor, etc. Now I live in a somewhat racially mixed area that was previously an all-white suburb. The student body has some diversity, but the teachers, administrators, and other staff members are all white. My kids have friends who are people of color but the people who are in positions of authority and respect in their lives are all white, and I don't think that's healthy.

Many times it would be them and one or two other white kids in the classroom with the rest being black, Asian or Hispanic. Even though they had been raised without racism in the home, it's next to impossible not to be exposed to it, even at a young age, especially when you live in the South. It was a life altering experience for them and gave them a whole new perspective on race that has stood them in good stead as they have grown up.

Many years ago. Both my sisters learned spanish and retained it for many years.
This was a long time ago as one was 76 when she past 5 years ago.
The other is 83.

Yes times have changed and not for the best on some things.

This presupposes that with the interracial baby making the offspring will identify as black, hispanic and asian. For example around half of asian women marry out of their race, mostly to white men. Zuckerbergs. It is unlikely these children will identify as asian because there is little social benefit generally and Asians get totally screwed when applying to college. Hispanics also intermarry at a high rate. Black men intermarry some but black women rarely do.

Anyway, as long as the power structure remains white more people will join the white ranks when they can (see the Irish, Spanish and Italians). Outside of college admissions, it pays to be white.

And I can't blame anybody for looking out for their own best interests.

However, it will be the racists that will be feeling the heat from those white-looking interracial babies, that will know very quickly the true face of their enemy.
