Detroit was ahead of its time.

I've been reading a lot about demographics lately. It seems there are countless places like Ferguson where there are more blacks than whites but whites have all the power.

This situation in Ferguson has reminded me all along of the riots in Detroit back in the late 60's. I was a little girl at the time but still remember some of that. I have an uncle who was a cop in Detroit back in those days. About 5 years ago or so I visited with this uncle and was shocked to hear him say that whatever situation we were discussing just needed someone to crack a few heads together. Ugh. I know that is exactly what is NOT needed.

I really think lot of hate has been stirred up in recent years. The hateful rhetoric of the right has gotten louder & more extreme and economic inequity is out of control. It seems to me that the perfect storm that occurred all those years before has blown back to this country and may break over many of our communities yet again.

If it does come to that I suspect it will be worse this time around. And I say that knowing that some 45 +/- years later Detroit has not only not recovered but hovers on the brink...

I grew up in rural Wisconsin and do not remember this level of blatant in your face racism when I was growing up. Yet when I was home visiting recently I listened to white family members say very overtly racist things about the president amongst other topics. It was worse than watching FOX news and that is saying a lot. The oldest family members were the worst and I can't say I'm sorry some of those folks are not much longer for this world. So hateful. I expect it will get worse as minorities continue to move into this country and things get worse economically (especially if more jobs are moved with NAFTA style legislation).
