How exactly does revealing a failed rescue mission endanger anything?

I've heard some people going bezerk over revelations that there was a failed hostage rescue attempt. People are saying that by tipping our hand, ISIS will be extra careful in the future, moving hostages around, etc.

The assumption here is that ISIS is just now finding out for the first time that we attempted a rescue mission. However, wouldn't they have found out after the actual rescue attempt? It's not like having a few dozen commandos engaging in a firefight is a discrete venture. Once that took place, they already knew that we had tried to rescue the hostages.

By making the revelation public, we didn't tell them anything they didn't already know.

Of course, some people will always find reasons to blame Obama for everything.

before, the hostage takers would have very lax defenses because they couldn't possibly imagine anyone trying to rescue hostages. they don't have movies in caves, you know.

afterwards, knowing that we tried and their feeble defenses proved more than adequate to foil a rescue attempt, they're sure to reinforce their defenses, because that's what you do when your defenses demonstrably work fine already.
