I've noticed that there are tons of photos for this earthquake

That's one of the differences that social media and smart phones make. We now have hundreds of eyewitnesses for practically everything that happens. People can send photos of their homes and broken water mains and the broken asphalt and fallen chimneys in their entire neighborhoods. The news media are asking people to send their photos and videos which can only help everyone, including the emergency officials.

We never had this much coverage in the Loma Prieta earthquake which happened way before social media. The earthquake isn't nearly as bad as that one was and it's pretty much localized in the North Bay Area of Napa Valley and no one seems to have been killed. The news says the social media response started within seconds of the earthquake. KRON4 is saying that they have received over 300 photos and lots still coming. They're also getting tons of twitter messages.

At my age, and with my experience of things that affect everyone at once, this is really new and different. To me this is the future I've been waiting for. And it's because I remember the time when social media wasn't around that I appreciate what a difference it's making.

for some of those photos here is a link to a DUer's OP started by yuiyoshida:

Because of my love of technology, I always thought I was born too early or too late. And that applies to not just technology, jobs, retirement and a lot of other things.

Although much of what has transpired, especially in politics, wars and all the religious fundamentalism resurgence has been a profound disappointment I am also very excited about all the technological advances that have put so much power right in our individual hands. We're living in the midst of changes that are as life and societal-changing as the Industrial Revolution was in the 19th Century. There is much still to come as the result of the new technology. It's exciting and I'm very glad I'm not taking these changes for granted. It makes me know I'm part and parcel and deeply involved in the emergence and flowering of a different future.

I hate it when *I* do things like that.

I'm surprised there aren't more threads about the quake.
