As long as corporations are allowed to act as parasites instead of being compelled to good citizenship, then college will stay out of reach, health care will be rationed, and programs that help Americans will be cut. The GOP are little more than traitors.

Another reason for the deficit.
Under FDR, the federal government instituted a war tax to pay for WWII. (I believe, but am not sure, that the war tax was not abolished until the Eisenhower administration. If I am correct, that would have been another reason for the fond memories of Ike's era.)
We don't levy war taxes anymore because neocons of both of the two largest parties don't want to make war even more unpopular than it has to be.
I mean, sending your kids into harm's way and seeing them come home in coffins or missing limbs and/or facing a lifetime of PTSD is one thing. But paying more taxes? Jeesh. Read my lips Prioritize, willya?
