Contrary to popular belief, Michael Sam has not made an NFL team yet.

The Rams and other teams are beginning to cut down their numbers toward a team goal of 53. There are some who will be on the practice squad.

That said, many sports' reporters and NFL watchers believe he will make the team. He has done a good job in the time he has had to play in the pre-season.

Crossing my fingers.

2. How St. Louis Rams Can Make Michael Sam Fit on 2014 Roster

With three of the four preseason games now in the books for the St. Louis Rams, rookie defensive end Michael Sam is one game away from turning his lifelong dream into a reality.

That doesn’t mean Sam has solidified his spot on the Rams’ 53-man roster, because a lot can change between now and September 7, but things do look promising for the seventh-round pick out of Missouri.

Heading into the preseason finale, Sam has tallied three quarterback sacks, four quarterback hits and five combined tackles. Even though those numbers have come against second- and third-string offensive linemen, they are impressive nonetheless.

This, in turn, means Sam has undeniably produced when asked to and deserves a roster spot because of his production. However, if the Rams do opt to keep Sam on the 53-man roster, their front-office staff will have to get creative.

Bleachereport link is slow in opening so I don't know if they mentioned this - amongst the consideration for the Rams is that their decision to keep or cut Sam is that he only gets a 7th round salary.

his actual talent level would have had him drafted 2-3 rounds higher. Not a superstar, but a mid round player who dropped because he was gay and teams didn't want to pick him. It appears he's getting a legit shot at making the team. I think he could very well make it.

They are constantly moving their defensive linemen in and out. In this type of defense, Sam would work well. He would be a fresh player with a change of pace and technique. While they do have several returning players in that area, someone like Sam could be a real plus.

But with 3 sacks etc. in the preseason his chances of making the roster seem better than 50-50 right now.

Even if he doesn't make the Rams there is a good chance that he will get picked up by another team. You can never have too much depth, especially with pass rushers, given how common injuries are. The kid has enough physical talent and football smarts to stay in the league for a while.
