NYT Public Editor: Michael Brown'No Angel' Description A 'Blunder'

By CAITLIN MACNEAL Published AUGUST 25, 2014, 5:21 PM EDT

The New York Times public editor, Margaret Sullivan, said that Times reporter John Eligon's description of Michael Brown as "no angel" in a profile of the Ferguson, Mo. teen was a "blunder."

"That choice of words was a regrettable mistake. In saying that the 18-year-old Michael Brown was 'no angel' in the fifth paragraph of Monday’s front-page profile, The Times seems to suggest that this was, altogether, a bad kid," she wrote on Monday.

The Times got a lot of heat for the phrase, and Elignon defended the line and his profile of Brown in an interview with TPM on Monday.

Elignon lamented to TPM that those criticizing the phrase did not take the rest of the profile into account.

dirty about Brown b/c he was recently experimenting with the rap form. Talk about tapping into some age-old stereotypes!

That's like a killer saying I don't understand why people only look at the knife in the back instead of the flowers I placed around the corpse.

Wahhhhh! Elignon used a certain phrase, but it's those mean meanies who took exception to it that are to blame, because those mean meanies "did not take the rest of the profile into account." Those mean meanies!

Naturally, any of the good people of these here United States and America who seized on that phrase to justify Officer Wilson pumping bullet after bullet into Mr. Brown are not mean meanies, not racist in the least, and it's a sure bet they're not criticizing Elignon for using those particular words, because it gives them a built-in excuse for whatever the hell they want to say. So thanks, John Elignon, for providing les mots juste for the bigots. In the New York Times, no less!
