(13,141 posts)warmongering, civil liberties, war on drugs, etc., they are
attacked here as a Rand Paul troll.
My point of view, having listened to many young people
in recent months -- not those who've been active Obama
supporters, but their peers, far and wide: they find these
issues compelling; they also are sick of both political
parties in general and lean "libertarian." I will point out
there are vast numbers of them. They may be poorly
educated about politics but they're a force.
Posters who express this sort of thing are not promoting
Rand Paul, but suggesting Hillary may have some serious
competition, if she's the candidate, because of these
particular issues.

Rand Paul on Ferguson: "There is a very good chance that this had nothing to do with race."

"Let's say you're African-American and you live there, let's say none of this has to do with race. It might not, but the belief if you're African-American and you live in Ferguson, the belief is, you see people in prison and they're mostly black and brown, that somehow it is racial, even if the thoughts that were going on at that time had nothing to do with race.
"So it's a very good chance that had(sic) this had nothing to do with race, but because of all of the arrest and the way people were arrested, that everybody perceives it as, 'My goodness, the police are out to get us,' you know? And so that's why you have to change the whole war on drugs. It's not just this one instance."

Our bad.. we only "perceive it" as such.. Only Rand Paul in his infinite wisdom knows what's going on here... and there's a "very good chance that this had nothing to do with race "
I like this from the comment section at the link..
"So some white guy from Kentucky is telling the black people in Ferguson that its all in their head. Rand Paul doesnt know a dam thing about what its like to be black." anniebella

(13,141 posts)I'm not a fan of him or his policies, and I don't know enough
specifics to inform others. I am talking about the superficial
impressions of many young people who aren't terribly
informed politically, to whom Paul has an appeal because
of his "apparent" stands on issues that matter to them.
I can pass along links and so on to a few of them, but I
think it's worth a concerted effort on the part of progressives
and/or the democratic party to understand the libertarian
appeal to the young. They do not think of it as Republican,
they think of it as less authority.
NCTraveler
(30,481 posts)As they should be. Also, extreme right wingers. I don't think he holds the positions you think he does on the issues he mentioned. Why do you feel it would be a positive move to pull our money out of Africa? Why do you think it would be a good move to pull back from the people we aid across the globe? That is what you get when you claim to support his thoughts regarding war mongering. It truly has nothing to do with war to him. It is about isolation, not war. People need to educate themselves with respect to this scum bag. He is completely opposed to progressive values. Very interesting you would even mention him with civil liberties. Shallow thinkers just sit back and go "he would never go to war with Iran". Never having the cognitive capacity to ask themselves why.

(13,141 posts)My only point about this: it's not that I think Rand Paul
is great; it's that he has an appeal to a large contingency
of young people without a particular political affiliation.

Less excitement, and more frustration with less-than-subtle, half-witted trolls advertising obvious agendas-- wasting time and bandwidth.

(9,796 posts)First off, I can't stand libertarians, especially American ones. The USA is already a low-tax/low-service country, about as close to a Libertarian country as you can be and still be a first-world nation. An American Libertarian is just someone who would rather have poor people starve than pay taxes. They're just fuckers who want every program that helps the poor abolished to save a few cents in taxes. I fucking hate libertarians.
Second, he's not even a consistent libertarian. One of real libertarian's very few redeeming features is a respect for women's right to choose but Paul is pro-life.
He's just another religious fanatic Republican who calls himself "Libertarian" because he figures it'll fool a few idiots into thinking he's sane.
In conclusion: Fuck him and I hope he follows Jesus's example and gets crucified.

REASON FOR ALERT
This post is disruptive, hurtful, rude, insensitive, over-the-top, or otherwise inappropriate.
ALERTER'S COMMENTS
Over the top drama. Rand is bad, but he at least wants to end the war on drugs and shut down the American Military Industrialization Complex --- he's to the left of many darling Democrats on these issues, even if he is a piece of crap overall.
You served on a randomly-selected Jury of DU members which reviewed this post. The review was completed at Tue Aug 26, 2014, 06:03 AM, and the Jury voted 1-6 to LEAVE IT.
Juror #1 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE
Explanation: Acceptable assessment of our enemy. A bit colorful, yes, rule violation...no.
Juror #2 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE
Explanation: And that goes for you, too, alerter.
Juror #3 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE
Explanation: No explanation given
Juror #4 voted to HIDE IT
Explanation: No explanation given
Juror #5 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE
Explanation: The fucking nerve of someone to alert on besmirching an ultra right winger like Rand Paul is over the top. Anyone who supports that Neo-nazi piece of trash doesn't belong on a Democratic site. He is to the left of no Democrat. You alerter need to get back to Stormfront where you came from.
Juror #6 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE
Explanation: I don't like this post. But, if people think it's over the top then they can say so. If this person wants to continue to alienate people just for entertaining the idea that Rand Paul has some to the left of Hillary ideas then so be it, the poster can handle the wrath of angry fact bearers.
Juror #7 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE
Explanation: Why alert on this?
Thank you very much for participating in our Jury system, and we hope you will be able to participate again in the future.

(1,098 posts)It appears the Paul supporters are starting to make their way to various political discussion sites again. I also like to monitor some conservative sites, and there they are also busy trying to emphasize the positions that might appeal to conservatives while trying to downplay his opponents as "unelectable."
One common tactic is to claim Democrats and Republicans are the same and Rand Paul is going to go against this status quo.
liberalmuse
(18,672 posts)there was a poll where Paul and Clinton were neck and neck or something. Even so, I would never vote for Rand Paul under any circumstance. He is a phony, and a right wing racist to boot, but I guess many politicians will be whomever they think will get the votes. I already know what this man stands for, and will never support his agenda. I may not be totally on board with Clinton, and would prefer someone much more liberal, but I'll certainly vote for her if she is the one who ends up the candidate.
