#Ferguson city council meeting scheduled for tomorrow is postponed as city seeks larger venue. (Due to increased interest from residents wishing to attend this meeting, the City is searching for a larger venue to accommodate the anticipated attendance.) http://www.fergusoncity.com/CivicAlerts.aspx?aid=354

I just wish I had the words that should be said.

My heart breaks and I would like to believe we are all better than this.

Vague, I know. Sorry

importance until I saw your OP.

Seismic changes are possible right now which in the Real World people ARE talking about, they BETTER BE, or this moment too will pass.

But here on DU it's the tired old boring 'my team is good' people everywhere are growing so sick and tired of as it hasn't done much to improve things, has it?

I think people are realizing that if they want things to change they will have to do it themselves, and let the politicians follow THEM.

Thank you for this thread. I am hoping that out of this awful tragedy some good things will begin to happen.

3-hour community townhall here in St. Louis was packed, standing-room only. Real, raw, honest emotions, dialogue, networking, action steps.

@kevin_powell we need a video . . . that was one of the most engaging discussions I've witnessed this month. Can we find a video later?

Kevin Powell ‏@kevin_powell 16m
@ronfullwood We will make sure that happens. And thank you . . .

. . . when I get that, I'll be certain to post it here, sabrina.

there's a vicious struggle, the house always wins, and people won't believe their own eyes because that struggle was so vicious

“The House” not only decides which games to play; it can also literally change the rules of the game in the middle of the game! Notice, moreover, that this observation is true not only of casinos in Las Vegas but also of the game we call law. That is, ordinarily, a simple majority vote in Congress or in the Supreme Court suffices to change the rules of the law game. For example, Congress has the power to change the rules of the copyright game, while the Supreme Court has the ex post (and self-declared) power to review any changes made by Congress. But is majority rule consistent with the ideal of the “rule of law,” especially in the case of unelected and unaccountable Supreme Court judges? We don’t think so. In fact, if we could amend or re-design Article III of the U.S. Constitution (which, by the way, makes no mention of the power of “judicial review”), we would seriously consider imposing a two-thirds “super-majority” voting rule on the Supreme Court to limit the judiciary’s power to change the rules of the game. (Our modest rule-change proposal, though, is not without irony.)

from Fb:

"I have so much to say about the ‪#‎Ferguson‬/Missouri townhall meeting we did with folks here in Missouri last night. And I will later today. But first need to simply say how deeply inspired and energized I am by my days here in the area, by both younger and older people, by people of all races, cultures, creeds (we are sisters and brothers, each and everyone of us), by my beautiful Black community. I am tired, very very tired, but it is a good tired, if you know what I am saying. At some point this week I will return home to New York City, more determined than ever to work for true change, freedom, justice, equality for people, all people, in this country, on this earth. I, we, really have no other choice. "#Ferguson

from StL public radio:

Powell is a New York-based activist, author and president and co-founder of BKNationOrg. In his opening remarks, Powell told the audience that Michael Brown’s death and the protest in Ferguson are starting points for a dialogue communities can no longer ignore.

Activist Powell said he hopes people make a commitment to continue meetings like Monday’s.

“There needs to be a sustained regular gathering of people like this, not with a guest speaker or guest moderator in from New York,“ he said. “But it’s got to be led and organized by local people, and the people here have to make a commitment to that.”

Beyond sustaining community meetings, Powell said it’s important for the community to commit to justice.

“Michael Brown is the son of all of us,” he said. “That’s the brother of all of us. That’s the grandson of all of us. And for me you know, we are talking about race today, but as an activist I don’t care if it’s racism, sexism , classism, homophobia. Every from of oppression and injustice should be unacceptable to all of us.”
