Only fourteen vice presidents have become presidents Eight of these because of the death of a sitting president.

So only six of forty-four vice presidents have ascended to the presidency through election.

13% chance is pretty slim odds to be crying about.

Would not be any more viable it they were VP right now.

And we still have 2014 to worry about first.

VP's are never looked to as successors. Do some homework its a rare occurrence.

Not a huge Biden fan, but Biden has served well, aside from the occasional gaffe.
There are plenty of Democratic options for 2016. I don't think it would have made much sense to replace Biden just to get a frontrunner. It might be refreshing to see someone new, other than the previous VP, run.
