Awaiting judges decision with Gabriela Isler at the Miss Universe Pageant in 2013.

Last week 24-year-old Patricia Yurena Rodríguez, winner of Miss Spain in both 2008 and 2013, came out as lesbian through an Instagram post, making her the first openly lesbian beauty queen associated with the Miss Universe world. The picture, captioned "Romeo and Juliet" shows Rodríguez in an intimate moment with girlfriend Vanesa Klein, a Spanish DJ and singer. I thought the silliness about Michael Sam was so well known that the joke would be obvious. I should have realized that, with so many stories just on DU, not to mention in the wider world, not everyone would know about ESPN's foray into hard-hitting investigative journalism.

And, to save HKC from having to come to my rescue again, let me clarify that my description of ESPN's story about Sam is sarcasm.

29. It brought some publicity to the pageant, and Trump needs every buck he can get.

I don't know whether Trump is a homophobe. Whether he is or not, though, I suspect he has absolutely no belief or principle that takes priority over his self-aggrandizement (drawing attention to himself and making money).

If he takes any action against her, it will be because he's calculated the publicity value of the resulting controversy.
