BOSTON A Lowell woman filed a federal labor charge Aug. 20 against Market Basket, accusing the company of intimidating her while she engaged in legally protected activity, according to a copy of the filing.
Karen Bostwick, an employee in the company's Tewksbury headquarters, filed the charge with the National Labor Relations Board office in Boston against Market Basket for "violating the right to picket and strike," according to the charge.
Bostwick, who could not be reached for comment Tuesday, wrote that the company of threatened "to terminate protesting employees" created a "hostile work environment" and a "lack of safety." Further details were not available.
The federal National Labor Relations Act protects most hourly employees without management responsibilities when they protest or strike over wages and working conditions, among other reasons, said Peter Bennett, an attorney with offices in Boston and Portland who is an expert in collective bargaining and in helping employers manage union issues.
