Keith Olbermann had a segment about this last night. He had many interesting quotes from different people.
Apparently, Snyder will give up the name Redskins if he gets major concessions to build a new stadium in DC where RFK once was. That would mean money that would ultimately come from those who live in DC. Other goodies would have to be thrown in too. He is tired of FedEx field because it's 17 years old.
Owners of different pro teams have pulled the stadium scam for years in order to get major money to build new stadiums. They threaten to move teams and such.
Jeffrey Loria did this in Miami to get a new stadium for the Marlins. The Atlanta Braves are moving out of Turner Field which is only 17 years old. Cobb County offered them a lot of incentives to move there which has rightfully set people on the warpath. Never mind that the new stadium has little mass transit to reach it or a lot of space for parking. It is very inconvenient for many fans who have supported them for years.
Money, money, money.....

(43,867 posts)I'm sure there would be legal wrangling, but a franchise is a franchise. McDonald's might not be able to force an owner to sell restaurant but they can pull franchise rights and put another McDonalds down the street. I worked in the Hotel Industry for a bit and the company was constantly pulling franchise rights form hotel owners. They'd lose 'Holiday Inn' (for example) branding and all assistance from corporate.
The NFL could award a new franchise in the DC or Virginia area and pull TV coverage from the Redskins team - among other things.
Just a theory, of course, and the NFL would probably never do it.

(33,688 posts)but the lawsuits would cost insane amounts of money.
The NBA made Sterling sell the Clippers but 1) it was based on something he said that was held to be detrimental to the league (and oh, brother, was it ever), not the team name; and 2) he walked away with enough money to choke a whale.
Snyder will do nothing until team merch/ticket sales nosedive, which ain't gonna happen, or the NFL forces his hand.

(45,476 posts)to build a new stadium for the football team. The infrastructure and mass transit are already in place. The parking is in place too. Demolishing the unused RFK and building a new stadium there makes sense. It also is a better, more central location than FedEd field for fans.

(4,788 posts)and have to agree with you that it is a perfect location for a stadium. Besides, I want that racist scum-sucker and his team out of Maryland. Oh, poor baby - FedEx Field is 17 years old and he had to agree to use it because the deal was in place when he bought the team. Go back to DC Danny Boy.

(47,953 posts)Not the team, the organization. They have plenty of money to build new stadiums for all the owners, if they were required to do so.
