I don't give a rat's ass if it is The Globe - there needs to be backlash for this.
It's one thing for the teanuts to pass this around in their chain emails but to put this in print and have it staring at every person going thru the checkout line?
Playing politics with the horrible death of James Foley - what the HELL IS GOING on here?
All of the shit that Cheney and his puppet pulled - never did I see anything like this. Shame!

(2,442 posts)There needs to be an organized effort against The Globe for this.

(9,796 posts)I'm British so I don't know if this is coming from some respected bastion of journalism akin to the NY Times or some disreputable gossip monger like the National Enquirer.
jillan
(39,451 posts)half of the country will believe this. They are feeding the tea-slime and blaming our President for Foley's death which is disgusting.
I guarantee you this will become the new talking point coming to a CNN show within the week.

(9,796 posts)The unending cycle of outrage seems to go:
Radical right -> Rush -> Mainstream right -> Fox -> Mainstream media.
Those shouldn't be thought of as distinct steps but rather overlapping spheres of influence. Also, there is vitually no seperation between the crazies and the mainstream right anymore.

(135,425 posts)The Globe is in "Batboy" territory. The National Enquirer is the Congressional Record by comparison!
Stories that the Enquirer got right: http://mentalfloss.com/article/24291/7-stories-national-enquirer-actually-got-right
They're equal opportunity, politically speaking--they broke John Edwards' mistress/baby story, and Rush Limbaugh's "make the maid buy my oxy" story. The nailed Gary Hart AND Bob Dole.
The Globe doesn't have anything close to that kind of track record.

(45,274 posts)The Enquirer has standards. Low standards admittedly, but standards. Enough, anyway, to hold down the frequency of libel suits in recent years.
The Globe (or Glob, as I prefer to think of it) has no standards.
steve2470
(37,457 posts)However, from what I know, they usually get it WRONG. This is obvious almost partisan sniping at the President, and the facts are probably wrong or distorted by either omission or commission. Almost partisan = it's like the Globe is an arm of the RNC.

That also speaks volumes about the Globe

(37,457 posts)I think tabloids like The Globe aim for the low information voters who aren't motivated enough to find out if this is BS or not. The National Enquirer was in the right place at the right time, but I'm not aware of any other tabloid scoops like it, maybe there are some.
I think a boycott/protests are a good idea but as I said above, their target audience may react with curiosity and buy MORE copies, not less. "Why are those liberals all upset", that kind of thing.

(34,136 posts)Neil McGinness, Weekly World News, Bat Boy LLC
Simon and Schuster, Sep 14, 2010 - Humor - 224 pages
The Weekly World News team uncovers the definitive and faux-tastic story of Bat Boy, from his hardscrabble origins in the caves of West Virginia to his global influence in the twenty-first century. Going Mutant reveals how Bat Boy has heeded a call to service that has embarrassed less forthcoming mutants: During the Gulf War, he deployed with the Special Forces. He later earned a special commendation from George W. Bush for his use of sonar, which led troops to the spider hole housing Saddam Hussein. And now Bat Boy joins forces with an unlikely crew of soldiers, scientists, and swamp mamas to battle a global pandemic that threatens to destroy our planet.
This is an intimate look at the half-bat/half-boy, who has until now been shrouded in mystery (despite countless sightings and a megahit musical). Here, Bat Boys life is illuminated through a series of public and private documents obtained by the equally mysterious Dr. Barry Leed of the University of Indianapolis and through Weekly World News clippings. All this information comes together in this new Bitingsroman that reveals an archetypal American trickster who has risen from his lowly origins to become Americas favorite freedom fighter.

(25,183 posts)is anything but trash. When you're waiting to have your groceries rung up, you're a captive audience, and the printed materials all try to grab you with the two second glance you're practically forced to give them. A lot of high-sugar junk is stationed there to get attention, too.
We have self-checkout lines in most US supermarkets, they don't bother with most of that trash in those places.

But I will certainly grant that those are the exceptions rather than the rule when it comes to what's in the checkout magazine slots.

(3,982 posts)Yes, the globe is not a real news organization, but when people present news there should be some standards that can't be crossed.
And that includes stuff like this and should also include restrictions for planting false stories; even if they come from the government.
I Know that would not be an easy thing to regulate. But surely there must be some way to have at least some kind of standard.

I also started noticing that the people I knew who were the most wrapped up in that sort of thing were the same people who believed and forwarded every ridiculous chain email that came around. The same people who wanted the most dramatic, sensationalized stories to be true. The same people who watched Nancy Grace. Ugh.

We'd cut out the really vague ones, "A famous actor will have marital difficulties..." or the really obvious ones. "There will be trouble in the Middle East." Duh...
In the 5 or 6 years we did that, you know how many "predictions" they got right? Zero.
As to the Globe, well, if we went by the "headlines" on the cover, Michelle and Barack Obama have divorced 6 or 7 times, had secret marriages to Hillary, (both of them!) and Laura Bush threw George out of the White House due to his drinking, and George threw laura out due to drug abuse.

This is different. This is turning the most despicable tragedy and saying it's all the President's fault.
What's next week's headline going to be? Obama murdered Mike Brown while wearing a tan suit?
I don't give a shit if they say Obama uses drugs and is bi-sexual and has different lovers every nite....
but don't take a tragedy that the President tried more than once to have a different outcome and then say he didn't care.
