As a sex therapist I ask my clients about their sexual history. We talk about their first sexual encounters and their first time having intercourse.
Men and women tend to view the experience differently.
The magazine Psychology Today published an article on a study researching people's first times. The research out of Illinois State University spanned 23 years and included more than 5,700 college participants. It looked at gender differences in pleasure, anxiety and guilt. The researchers found:
- Overall, men experienced more pleasure than women
Over 23 years, the researchers discovered that mens pleasure levels remained steady. Women's pleasure levels, on the other hand, have steadily increased over the years.

(9,796 posts)While it's probably unreasonable to expect someone's first time to ever be completely free of anxiety, the finding that the pleasure reported by women has increased through the years suggests we're headed in the right direction.
That said, one should note that the finding is largely specific to western hetero couples. I'd be interested to know how the experiences of homo and bisexuals differ or don't from the average.

(146,286 posts)a great deal from person to person. For me, the first time was little more than a transition from "everything but" to "let's go" at a young age in my teens. No anxiety. No stress. Plenty of pleasure for both of us. Nothing really changed except adding one more thing to what had already been going on for an extended period of time.
