(10,175 posts)I never liked her much either. She never stuck me as being just funny in a good way, like Robin Williams was. Her humor was always at someone elses expense it seemed.

(14,881 posts)not that it would have been even remotely funny had she intended it as a joke.
She said some incredibly hateful things. Not. Funny.

(267,823 posts)I have no time to express sympathy for 'not nice human beings'.
Life is a bitch and then we die is perhaps the best epitaph for her life since she was a classic one with an upper-case B.

(20,582 posts)She said some pretty horrible things about people, even in interviews that were not meant to show off her comedic style. I don't like unnecessary meanness, and she reveled in it. That said, I do hope she recovers, or passes peacefully. Her family must be suffering right now.

(46,192 posts)Interviews with Joan the person are not insulting at all but rather humble and respectful.
As an aficionado of comedy, she did a lot of good stuff and did it when women weren't accepted in the field.
I wish I only admired perfect people, but I don't.
And some of the folks you defend, suddenly you have pangs about Joan? Nah. Your issue is that she was important for wimen's equality.
Do you think you're the ONLY person to have seen her in interviews?? What a crock of shit! And it hasn't got a thing to do with her being a woman, a comedian or anything else. HUMAN DECENCY still matters, whether you think so or not.
Who do YOU defend? And what's with the stalking? You're getting creepy.
I've never said an unkind word about anyone who didn't deserve it at one time or another for their OWN actions - and calling for Palestinians to DIE is about a fucking unkind as it gets. But aren't you just the special one .....
I also said I wished her a good recovery or peaceful passing, above ....... but you missed that in your little rant.
And I'm all for anyone and everyone who's played an important role in women's equality, including many, many of my own ancestors. Have you ever commented on or recc'd a thread in the women's group? Nah, didn't think so. Ever commented on women suffering and dying from the horrors of war, starvation, etc. around the world? Nah, didn't think so. You, I think are in it for the rah-rah's from the DU sucks club!!!
Oh, one more thing ... I once heard her say that certain parents shouldn't have children so ugly they looked like they'd been run over - twice - those kids were old enough to see this on the internet just as I had. No interview, just a gab thing at a party or something - did you defend calling Chelsea Clinton a dog? Sometimes comedians are just letting out what they really feel about people. There's a guy in town here who calls everyone a slut - men and women - I kicked him out of the bar for it and had people pissed off - that's just his thing!!!! Don't tell me what I care about and what I don't. And look in a fucking mirror!!!!

(825 posts)Really? Do I agree with everything she said? No. Do I wish her ill? Of course not. And if her "karma" means she dies peacefully with her family after a very successful career AND staying active until the end I hope for some of that "karma" for myself.

(12,647 posts)she called Michelle Obama "Blackie-O?" Using your logic, it's perfectly fine to be a racist as long as you have the word "insult comic" on your resume.

(45,850 posts)bigotry is bigotry period same standard for all
BainsBane
(53,003 posts)If only it were enforced in regard to bigotry against women. But of course we no too many are determined to ensure it is not. Then we have defenses of bigoted language by some. For example, How many insisted hiding the post with The Rude Pundit's blog entry was an outrage? Not only that, they decided HOF was responsible (based on no evidence) and members should be banned from the site as a result.
So you'll have to forgive me if I don't take proclamations of bigotry terribly seriously when people have previously insisted their rights to free speech hinge on being able to insult great swaths of the population with the most vile words. If we had not had vigorous defense of comedians who think rape is just hysterical, that would be another story. If we didn't have people arguing that feminists efforts against the use misogynist slurs (or rape and mutilation porn, etc...) amounted to "censorship," then I might believe people were committed to standing up to bigotry. If people here actually held themselves to the same standards they do public figures, then I might take the concern seriously. I don't, however, see that happening anytime soon.

I don't know if she considers herself a feminist or not. I would think she probably does, but that is for her to say.

(40,656 posts)deserved to because they were told to go. I remember Jews were told to go too but she conveniently forgot that. She knew children were killed but she didn't give a damn and calling Michelle Obama a tranny is beyond the pale. She says her worst stuff when she isn't in a routine.
roguevalley
(40,656 posts)in gaza deserved it because they were 'told to get out'. She chopped her face off but calls vile things to others. She may be an 'insult comic' which is bullshit to me but she is also a terrible person. To discuss her crappy 'talent' is not the same as wishing she was dead. Some do. I don't. But I also don't find her type of comedy anything but bullshit. You get back what you send out. I am sorry for her daughter and grandson but it is a struggle to find pity for her when she had none for anyone else even when she wasn't doing routines. I wish her to recover but at her age, I don't know if she can. Either way, it is as it probably is supposed to be.

(18,497 posts)The last time I saw her on a talk show, just a few days ago, she had cue words written in marker all over her wrist.
Many of the comments she has said lately were horrifying.
Indeed, they suggest she had lost judgement.
Besides.
Steven Tyler will get mad if we keep picking on his twin sister.

(20,226 posts)in such a condition. I recall the story of how in 1972 Rep. Shirley Chisholm, the first African-American Congresswomen visited Gov. George Wallace after an assassination attempt left him paralyzed. He asked her why she would bother to come and visit him considering his history. Ms. Chisholm responded, "I wouldn't wish this on my worst enemy." Gov. Wallace broke down and cried. So, Anyway I just don't feel right about gloating over such misfortune for anyone.

(901 posts)Joan and her daughter are very close, especially since Melissa is an only child. Reminds me of the close relationship I had with my mom.
Say what you want but Joan was a trailblazer in the world of comedy, opening the door for many women to make a career in a male dominated profession. Even after Johnny Carson tried to ruin her, she made a successful comeback...Joan has reinvented herself many times. After the fiasco with her Fox talk show she couldn't get a job anywhere, so she took a stint on Hollywood Squares, she also designed a successful line of jewelry for QVC, got her own show on E, etc.
DUers are free to make hateful comments, but just remember this is someone's mom, I can't imagine what Melissa must be going through.
Prayers for Joan, I hope she pulls through.
