Since DU'er "Big Tree" left I don't see anything on DU about what's going on. I don't watch MSM for news...only International... and it seems Ferguson killing has dropped off the news. What about the second shooting that seemed almost as bad as Michael Brown?
Anyone have an update? Seems all about Obama's Suit, Ukraine and the usual DU Issues?
Where is the investigation, at this point, and what about the second victim? Has anyone stood up for him?

(39,215 posts)robbed a convenience store - taking to cans of pop which he sat on the sidewalk outside the store. He then waited with a small knife in his hand. When the police arrived he took a couple steps toward them until they opened fire on him despite the fact that he was not close to them. They used a lot of shots to kill him. It appeared to be suicide by police.
That is what I remember being said about his death.
I had not heard about any woman.

(84,711 posts)What happened that no one cared about this victim? "Two energy drinks and donuts?"
----------
"The video shows that police told Powell to remove his hand from his pocket, which he did. Police said Powell held a knife in his hand, though it is unclear from the video if Powell actually brandished the knife at the officers. The owner of the convenience store from which Powell allegedly shoplifted told police he had a weapon, a claim corroborated by the owner of a nearby barber shop who called 911 about Powell, according to 911 calls obtained by St. Louis Public Radio.
Powell approached them, shouting, "Shoot me! Shoot me, already!" As Powell continued to approach them, the officers shot and killed him.
Fewer than 20 seconds elapsed from the time police arrived on the scene to the time they shot Powell. The two officers fired 12 shots at Powell, according to police chief Sam Dotson.
Powell allegedly took two energy drinks and donuts from a convenience store, the owner of the store told a 911 dispatcher.
Powell's death marks the second time in less than two weeks that police in the St. Louis metropolitan area have shot and killed a young black man suspected of a minor crime."

(3,208 posts)Most people seem to say it was "suicide by cop" and that settles it. Also, I have learned, this is "legal" for cops because he was within 21 feet and he had a knife.
To me it looked like murder...the cops puled up and within 20 seconds shot him. Didn't bother to see what was wrong or anything. I thought the incident showed how badly cops deal with mentally ill people.
It's a sad state of affairs, but it is good to see that the focus on the Michael Brown killing remains and hopefully is the start of a movement. There continue to be protests/marches in Ferguson as of today. But, I was hoping that about Occupy and that didn't bring as much change as we needed.
(Also, just for the record, the Powell shooting was in St. Louis city proper, the Brown shooting was in Ferguson, which is in St. Louis county, the suburbs of St. Louis. St. Louis is one of the few cities that is not within a county).

(13,390 posts)There are three people who tried to fired shots presidents who were tackled and arrested on site. Two of them have even been paroled. With that in mind, the lack of proportion here is absolutely horrifying.

(62,325 posts)be forgotten and we would return to the same old stuff.
If you are talking about the young guy who was shot and who was holding a knife at the time, it appears that in the US today, this is acceptable.
Cops have a license to kill. And not many are going to try to stop it apparently. We have so much more important things to 'get back to'.
To answer your question, nothing is going to happen to the cops who unnecessarily killed that unfortunate man. In the US killing minorities and poor people is the norm.
I appreciate your asking. I fully understood why Big Tree left. HE cares, and he realized that here on DU few care much about important issues like this. This is a political forum and politics most of the time, I and so many others have come to realize, have very little to do with PEOPLE. It's all about personalities it seems.
On the good side, Ferguson Protesters have filed a multi-million dollar lawsuit against the Ferguson Police Dept, it is a Civil Rights case. There is a thread with the details here on GD.

(62,325 posts)This tragedy finally drew the media's attention to the huge issues of racism in law-enforcement and the militarization of the police and for once, they were actually willing to report it.
Without a free and open press, which we have not had for a long time, it is easy to get to the point we are now at. If there had been a free and open press the problems could never have reached the point they have. As we saw, because of the coverage, they withdrew their 'army' which was the CAUSE of the 'riots' and the National Guard. But without that coverage, it's likely more people would have died or been seriously wounded and/or falsely arrested. What this brief moment demonstrated is just how important an independent media is to a democracy.

(84,711 posts)Shooting people for misdemeanor and bringing in MRAPs, Assault Weapons, and Military Gear and Tactics is finally getting national and international attention. If another incident happens..(and figuring it will given the climate in USA these days) there will be information and evidence to build on. The MS US Media can't cover up the militarization of our country and lack of rights for people to peacefully assemble much longer. That it had to get this far and will probably go further before the Politicians and the RWCrazies wake up is the tragic part.
