The American Forces Network (AFN) Kaiserslautern PowerNet transmitter goes off the air Sunday, August 31st. The hills ARE alive now that the racism, misogyny, homophobia, anger and hate of Mr. Limpballs no longer pollutes the European air.

After numerous petitions, emails, letters, and pleas for removal of Mr. Limpballs from the AFN, our military men and women in Europe will finally be spared. The scourge of hate and fear broadcast to them on the tax-payer dollar will go quiet. Rush Limbaugh may give the show to them for free, but the tax-payer pays for the station operations.

(31,963 posts)There are two stations: Power Talk and The Voice.
Lineup:
AFN PowerTalk gives you three full hours of Rush Limbaugh, Ed Schultz, Sean Hannity and Thom Hartmann each weekday - plus a weekend lineup never before seen nor heard in political talk radio. Its the most complete list of shows from liberal to conservative and everything in between all on one channel.
AFN PowerTalk the only channel on earth where you can find all the political talk heavy weights, like Glenn Beck, Stephanie Miller, Mark Levin, Randi Rhodes and more! Where left and right collide...AFN PowerTalk.
The Voice is your source for news, talk and information. You can get Rush Limbaugh, Ed Schultz, Mike Huckabee, The Osgood File, Kim Komando, Sean Hannity, Alan Colmes, Banmiller on Business, At Home, Health Beat, Big Biz Show and so much more. The Voice is your single source for AP news, ABC news, Fox news, and military news.
The Voice stands alone for the most complete news coverage from multiple sources. Stay informed and get up-to-date information all in one place.

(357 posts)This action is a result of the current administration shutting down a source of news, information and entertainment to our service members, their families and support staff in order to save about 60 million bucks.
For that idiot at Kos to take any credit for this is just moronic.
My Grand Daughter is an USAF nurse stationed at the Kaiserslautern Landstuhl Regional Medical Center and I can assure you that she and her fellow Airmen and soldiers are not real happy about this development.
Oh sure they can still get streaming audio but many prefer radio for it's mobility.
But then they're just military so who gives an eff.

(3,811 posts)I doubt that anyone joins the service with the expectation that entertainment radio programming will be provided at all US military bases. I remember my sadness when WVUA went off the air in Nashville, but somehow I manged to persevere. There are an endless variety of opportunities to find fulfillment from being stationed in Germany without a base radio station.

(28,117 posts)broadcasts being stopped?? Grrrr.
Glad all my letters and petitions signings did not go for naught.
Your post has the odor of a troll.
And, for your info, DUers support our military's welfare more than rethugians lawmakers do.

(1,151 posts)I am stunned. I was so out raged that they broadcasted this a hole its nothing but fascist propaganda. Are you telling me , that they have decided that fascist propaganda is not cool, or are you telling me, that the this phase is over and the next phase will be 10 times worse?
former9thward
(31,963 posts)The shows are remaining the same. The medium is changing because the technology that average members of the military use to listen to shows has changed.

(90 posts)Ever consider that a sizable number of folks might like Rush?
He does have the largest radio audience in the country.
I agree that the fact that it was done to save money is a crappy thing to do to our troops.

The military as a whole tends to be more conservative than the general population.

Fortunately, I don't think this was an ideological decision. There is still plenty of talk radio (left and right) for service members to listen to.
Imagine the outrage if a Republican administration killed off broadcasts from Randi Rhodes, Thom Hartman, and Ed Schultz.
And I agree with Sopkoviak that Kos is a moron for thinking he had anything to do with this action.
BTW, I spend 8 years in Germany and a year in Turkey during the 70's & 80's. AFN & AFRTS were lifesavers.

(22,974 posts)The nations 24 million troops and veterans account for about 10% of the nations potential voters, but theyre not the monolithic bloc many believe.
Outsiders tend to think the U.S. military is made up entirely of blood-and-gut conservatives, à la John Wayne, but theres little real evidence to back that up. When the Iraq war was launched, the consensus among U.S. military officers interviewed at the time was that one in three officers opposed it, suggesting they all werent gun ho.
The officers by and large are more conservative, says an Army sergeant just back from Afghanistan. But the enlisted tend to be more liberal. Of course, with fewer than one in five of those in uniform an officer, theres a lot more enlisted voters.

(146,281 posts)base on the Black Sea coast in Turkey, even we had an AFRTS AM station on the base. AFRN news on the hour and non-stop music the rest of the time. No talk shows. No nothing but music and news. There were three guys who covered the shifts, playing real vinyl, mostly supplied by people stationed there. A lot of times, the station just played whole album sides with no interruptions. At night, the station played taped music on the slowest speed their deck supported, so the three guys didn't have to run the station 24/7.
I guess things have changed, but we all appreciated having that station available. That and the base movie theater, which ran movies all night for the shift workers on the base. Mostly a couple of years old. We once even had a non-stop Spaghetti Western film festival, featuring all of the Sergio Leone Good, Bad and Ugly series. The audience kept a running count of dead people out loud during the movies, which we all saw multiple times. Clint Eastwood. Excellent.
