‘Shove It’ Indicator: More People Now Quit Than Get Fired

The number of people quitting their jobs in February outnumbered the amount of workers that were laid off by companies for the first time since this economic recovery began, a sign that consumer confidence may be higher than investors currently believe...

... “Quits go hand-in-hand with consumer confidence and for the first time of the recovery, quits represent a greater percentage of total separations than do involuntary layoffs,” wrote Nicholas Colas, chief market strategist at ConvergEx Group, in a note to clients that broke down the data. “Careful analysis of February’s JOLTS data leaves us scratching our heads and hoping March was an anomaly.”

.. if history is any guide, these confident quitters could be on the move, foreshadowing a better job picture for this Spring.

A soon as the economy improves and people can get a new job, they leave those crappy jobs with unbearable working conditions (bad bosses, illegal overtime, etc.). I'm thinking specifically of those jobs at the online retailer's warehouses that sound like working in hell. Prepare to hear a lot of "we can't find people to do those jobs" crap soon. And I'll bet working conditions 'surprisingly' get better that those businesses...

I retired 10 years ago and got bored, so I took this job. After a year it got to be a pain working midnights. So, I'll just tighten my belt a little and see if I stumble into something new.

Take This Job And Shove It! the fact that more people feel they can do that is a good sign.

It also indicates wages may soon see an uptick - if employers are soon going to have to worry about employee retention, they're going to have to make it worth their employees' while to stick around.

knowing how difficult it's been to leave. As jobs open up, there will be A LOT of people giving the finger to their current employers.
