Mormon Women
http://mormon.lds.net/mormon-beliefs/mormon-women
By todays standards, Mormon women often seem to have very traditional roles. They are encouraged to marry, and if possible to have children. They are also encouraged to remain at home while the children are at home if they can, although there is no penalty for not doing so. The husband is the head of the family.

Its important to understand that motherhood is treated with great honor within the church. A woman putting aside a career to raise a family is treated with respect, and this alone makes it different than it is for women outside the church, who, while making this same noble choice, is looked down on. Mormon women know its considered honorable to be paid to teach or care for the children of others. How is it, then, less honorable to care for your own, the children God specifically gave you to care for?

While baking cookies may be part of the job, good Mormon mothers also teach their children the gospel, and also teach practical skills needed for survival and academic skills needed for school. They are full-time teachers, not merely child-minders.

Because Mormons teach that families can last forever, the responsibility to create a loving home has far-reaching consequences, and this is what makes it an extraordinary responsibility. Mormon families have an eternal significance.

The wide variety of church volunteer positions give women opportunities to develop skills that translate well in the career world. Women are encouraged to get a college degree and to be prepared for a career should one be needed. This degree, coupled with the training and experience gained in church and community work, makes a Mormon woman a force to be reckoned with in any society.

A friend of mine is from Utah (she's Mormon) and from what she said, her Mom was treated like dirt because she was a nurse who did not quit her job when the kids were born.
Other ladies from the church practically shunned her.

(1 post)Mormon believe in keeping the sabbath day (sunday) holy. Steve Young played football on sunday every week for years.......but if a less famous and wealthy Mormon has to work on sunday a lot they are encouraged to find a new job.

(26,060 posts)it was her choice. If she chooses to let her religion or her husband have the final say, that's still her choice.

(2,198 posts)average middle class or poor women. She can't. Nothing in her life experience would make that so.
Ok, so lets stop the BS about Mitts wife. Sure any woman that bears 5 children has met her own set of issues. But please lay off Hillary Rosen for her comments. L Raising 5 children with all the money you will ever need, with the help of nannies, housekeepers, and chauffeurs, is not the same as a working mom with five kids having to worry about child care expenses, healthcare expenses, having pay docked for taking time off to tend to sick kids, cooking and for the family , including the working husband who himself is facing his own issues with intolerant bosses and co-workers, getting enough money together for high gas prices, catching buses, washing, ironing etc. There is just no comparison
PERIOD!! So stop pretending that Ann Romney has had to deal with what ordinary working moms face and please stop pretending that she really understands their situation. She doesnt and she doesnt care either.

Annie won the hubby lotto & that's her only claim to fame..
my main beef is with the media that only sees the frosting and never the cake
they are too afraid to touch the Mormon button, which would explain one reason why she was that stay at home mom..
the MAN rules the roost and as a good mormon wife (her choice again) she stayed home. It was no burden for her though and she should never be used as the template for stay at home moms who do given up a career to go back home, or for the ones who decide they are willing to live on less in order to stay home..
There is no ONE way to be a stay at home.. I have been that woman a few times in my life..I did not work for seven years because I had 3 kids in 5 years, and the sitter would have actually made more than I would have cleared, so I was happy to stay home until they were in school...and then again as my "baby" entered high school and was into sports, I quit for good so I could be a part of that..
We could afford it, so I did it. Never asked for pats on the back, but of course we also lived frugally so it could happen
