The Mitt Romney Gun Photo Challenge. Win a DU T-Shirt!

This morning we wanted to do a Pic of the Moment about Mitt Romney's address to the NRA today. So we googled for a while and were unable to actually find any pictures of Mitt Romney holding a real gun.

We did find one old black-and-white picture of him pretending to shoot himself with a toy gun. But alas, no pictures of Romney holding a real gun. This from a man who claims to hunt and own guns.

So... here's your challenge. Can anyone find a picture of the well-known firearms enthusiast Mitt Romney holding a gun? (If he held one at his NRA appearance today, that doesn't count. Eligible photos must have been taken before today.)

1. I'm going to put my money on the crickets, frankly.

Like much of the Republican upper class, the man was perfectly comfortable with avoiding and restricting guns right up until he had to appeal to the "great unwashed." I seriously doubt he's ever even thought about hunting, he's certainly never had to defend himself, and I don't think he's the type to engage in a hobby that requires practice, skill, and discipline the way target shooting does.

I was thinking of changing it because another poster thought it was a bird, LOL. I was inspired when Rachel Maddow explained how the "attack on caterpillars" is really an attack on women. I just did a search for pix of caterpillars and liked this one best, thought it was cute and recognizable as a caterpillar. Now, I think I'll keep it.

UPDATE at 5:30 p.m. ET: A campaign spokesman says Romney has two shotguns.

COLUMBUS, Ohio – At a town hall here, GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney said, in response to a question about gun control, “I have guns myself.”

“I believe in the second amendment, I’ll protect the second amendment, I have guns myself,” Romney said today at the town hall meeting at Capital University. “Not going to tell you where they are. Don’t have them on myself either, alright.”

But in 2007 – after Romney claimed that he did have guns he later retracted his statement, saying that he himself does not have guns but his sons do.

During a virtual debate with the Boston Globe in 2007 Romney said, “I have a gun of my own. I go hunting myself. I’m a member of the NRA and believe firmly in the right to bear arms,” to which the interview corrected him, “Ah, excuse me, but isn’t that son Josh’s gun?”

Romney responded, “Um, well, yes, but so what? He has several guns out at our vacation place in Utah, and I use them from time to time.”

So, did Mitt Romney buy a gun in the last five years?

The campaign did not immediately respond to a request for a comment as to whether Romney does now own his own firearms.

He did at the town hall meeting today offer this explanation for why people should be able to buy guns.

 In 1994 Senate race, Romney backed Brady bill and assault weapons ban, saying “I don’t line up with the NRA” and “that’s not going to make me the hero of the NRA.”

 Romney called Clinton crime bill “a big step forward.”

 As governor, Romney quadrupled gun licensing fees and vowed not to “chip away” at tough gun laws

 In 2004, Romney signed permanent state-level ban on assault weapons that was mirrored after federal assault weapons ban.

 In January 2006, Romney said he owned a gun – then two days later admitted he did not and the gun belonged to his son.

 Romney bragged about being member of the NRA but later revealed he didn’t join until August 2006, just before launching his presidential campaign.

 Romney recently said he’s “been a hunter pretty much all my life” but later admitted he hunted only twice in his life, later clarifying remarks by claiming he has hunted “small varmints … more than two times.”

 In 2006 press conference, Romney claimed he had been hunting “many times” after returning from quail hunt in Georgia.
