Putin Supports Project to ‘Secure’ Russia Internet

http://www.nytimes.com/2014/10/02/world/europe/russia-vladimir-putin-internet.html?_r=0

MOSCOW — President Vladimir V. Putin appeared on Wednesday to throw his support behind a plan to isolate the Internet in Russia from the rest of the World Wide Web, but said the Russian government was “not even considering” censoring Internet sites.

In a speech to the Russian National Security Council, Mr. Putin said the plan was intended to build a backup system to keep websites in the Russian domains — those ending in .ru and .rf — online in a national emergency.

Mr. Putin said other countries had taken to using the Internet “for not only economic, but military and political goals” and said information security was a priority for the country.

The Russian news media has labeled the plan, some details of which were reported last month by Vedomosti, a Russian daily, a “kill switch” for the Internet, or Russia’s answer to the “Great Firewall” put up by the Chinese.

Then when there is little opposition to that in Russia, more censoring will follow, sort of an internet censoring version of Martin Niemöller's poem.

Dictator. SOS as in other dictatorial countries. I guess this is what the Russian people want, some appear to love him so much.

could oppose Russia. Do you know of any?

Let me rephrase, do you know of any who really care about those issues and aren't just in it when they can make it appear that the US is the globe's quintessential devil?

after all, RT is the bestest news source in the world, and is watched by over 50 bazillion households in the US alone.

Surely Putin, that model of transparency and openness, wouldn't be trying to limit his citizens access to information.

He's not only the model of transparency and openness but supports dissidents whose only pure motives are to expose anything against transparency and openness and all that is good and holy wherever they go.

This must be wrong, even if Putin himself is admitting it...

in case its necessary

So, he's going to jump in and join the "get the latest, bestest" crowd and get Windows 10 for all of his people.

Because in Windows 10, the government has the ability to pull all of the curtains closed.

That's all I got.
Sorry.

Oh, and

If they support the same initiatives, since Putin is their hero and a great leader surely they support his plans!
