980,000 deaths in Africa from Ebola...

...according to a journalist friend with an analytical background in this who's been crunching the data.

And that's -just- the Ebola deaths; not the deaths from other causes because the hospitals aren't prepared now to treat anything -but- Ebola.

Statistics:
The CDC reports that there have been 5,987 cases of Ebola since 1976, resulting in 3,385 deaths. (as of September 29, 2014)

I'd tend to think CNN's number is on the low side, particularly since the deaths are going to be lower income & who knows if they are all being reported.

Still, a very different number from what you are reporting.

(Note: not trying to underplay this disease - I see people doing that but as someone with a compromised immune system I am pretty worried about Ebola coming to the US)

of 1.5 million deaths. That ongoing horror is basically forgotten by Americans. In part they are sanguine because the annual numbers used to be much higher, up around 5 million.....
