They just make personality contests more of a personality contest. Nixon famously won his debates with JFK on points, but lost on style. These days, "debates" aren't, really. Just opportunities to recite talking points and scream over each other. Nevertheless, I'm not surprised that so many of these chickenshit Republicans don't want to take the risk. Especially when one happens to be leading, debates aren't likely to do much for you.

Senator Udall had decided not to do some debates as well. Why do them if you are leading? Doesn't make sense.

Still, his side owns the media, so he will likely get away with this.

Didn't accept debates either. The Democratic opponents left an empty seat for him with his name card. He won anyway and will be the next Governor of Maryland. I don't blame candidates who don't want to debate. They are a circus sideshow.

Now a days there isn't even a chance for the candidates to ask each other questions. They each know the "gotcha" questions the other is going to ask and they have the talking points down pat. They will repeat them over, and over again.
To tell the truth, Mary Burke has not shown to be the most polished politician when it comes to interviews and she already has a few commercials aimed at her based on the answers she has.
The worst is a commercial were she is asked to define plagiarism, and to tell the truth it is on of the most cringe worthy commercials I have seen in a while. It certainly did her no good.
There is another report from Mother Jones magazine that he had a note written from an aid to "Emanate strength and warmth". If you have to be REMINDED to emanate strength and warmth it tells me you probably don't have those traits to begin with.
