North Carolina College Republican shuts down campus voter registration drive
David Ferguson
04 Oct 2014
The head of the College Republicans at one North Carolina college is determined to stop voter registration drives on her campus, whether theyre being sponsored by conservative or liberal groups.
According to MSNBC, Chairwoman Leigh Thomas of the High Point University College Republicans was caught on camera on Wednesday telling a conservative group that it could not register voters on campus because she wasnt comfortable with it.
Wednesday, as MSNBCs Zachary Roth noted, was also the day that state Republicans vowed to keep pushing for more restrictions on North Carolina voters, even if that means taking the fight all the way to the Supreme Court.

In a number of states, Republicans have been attempting to limit voting by doing away with early voting and registration, tightening voter ID laws and, on the whole, making it as difficult as possible for black voters, working women, hourly workers, the elderly and students to vote. These are all constituencies that have traditionally voted Democratic.

(10,252 posts)when you hate them, you join their team, because hatred is what they dish out to everyone who disagrees with them. See the crazy talkers for what they are: IGNORANT.r Thei minds are clouded with deluded percdeptions and lots of fear, greed, and hatred. Riducule them, ok. But don't hate them. Let you better person refuse to get sucked into hatred.

(28,787 posts)one of the reasons i hate them is because they force me into this terrible hate mindset. i have consciously throughout my life tried to steer myself to love and abandon hate. but republicans...republicans.
sigh. i do hear you. but goddamit! the shit they do and say and the way they own the airwaves. they're ruining the country, maybe even the planet.

(10,252 posts)that's why we need everyone of us to stay calm and stand up for our boundaries. You have to remember that everyone of those hateful crazy talkers has the kernal of a potential Buddha inside. The nasty vitriol that they exude cannot bring them much happiness or serenity. They are always all worked up and anxious about something or another, and it's usually something within someone else's boundary, like being gay or Muslim, or needing an abortion, or paying a little extra in taxes to feed the poor. Hating them just gets yourself all worked up as well. So when you catch yourself experiencing hatred for them, say "no." Make the distinction between them as human beings and their behavior. It took me a long time to realize this. And yes, I sometimes have the experience of hating something that a crazy talker has said or done. But then I remember that I can choose not to hate them. It takes practice. Over and over practice. You'll feel much happier.

(4,309 posts)I want so much to have "peace, love and understanding" mindset but just a snippet of hate radio or Fox News sets my blood pressure off the chart.
I can't help myself. I really do hate them. And they will destroy this country and planet if we allow it.

(28,787 posts)destruction of the planet is not limited to republicans, but they are the ones in this country at least who are apparently dedicated to making sure it happens as soon as possible.

(810 posts)Being ignorant requires being uninformed or unaware. I can't buy either case. If they've been dishing-out their side of the argument for any length of time then they've had to have been rebutted at some point. Assuming so, then they've been informed and should be aware that what they're spouting is nonsense, at best. No, they're stupid - they've been told and should be aware that their arguments are invalid, yet they persist.

(10,252 posts)not from the Western tradition of formal debate. Ignorance in Buddhism is the belief that one's thoughts and emotions about Self are solid. One's subjective experience is the way the world exists, when it doesn't exist that way at all. That whatever lies and demogoguery one tells is the truth, whether supported by facts or not.

(6,278 posts)I think the Republicans think others think as they do. That we just hate them the way they hate us. Case in point: at a campus where I used to teach, the RWers brought in Ann Coulter to give a talk. They're avowed motive was to stick a thumb in the collective eye of the "liberal faculty." A writer for the student paper urged everyone to attend, with his enticement to liberals framed in terms of seeing first-hand what they hate and thus enhancing the foundation of their beliefs. They just can't fathom that what we believe is founded not on hatred-of-them but on seeking what's to the benefit of all.

High Point University is a private liberal arts university in High Point, North Carolina, U.S., affiliated with the United Methodist Church. Founded as High Point College in 1924, it became High Point University in October 1991.
I was born in Greensboro, NC and went to college in Winston-Salem.... just up I-40. High Point is the 3rd and smallest town in "the Triad"... all 3 cities are close to one another....and I've NEVER heard of this school. High Point is known for furniture (there's a huge international market for furniture there) and the NC Shakespeare Festival (which I used to work for).
It's a private school with about 45,000 students. I think it mainly churns out nurses assistants.
Let her toot her horn. I hope someone will put a sock in it with as much force.

(9,298 posts)will backfire if it becomes widely known, and folks' awareness will be raised to the point where action is taken to register voters. Like in Ferguson, MO. This election cycle could set records for numbers voting if people wake up and understand why the suppression is going on in the first place.
