Noam Chomsky: Only One Thing Will Make Israel Change Course
Israels brutalization of Palestinians through exercises like mowing the lawn will persist without a change in U.S. policy.
BY Noam Chomsky
On August 26, Israel and the Palestinian Authority both accepted a cease-fire agreement after a 50-day Israeli assault on Gaza that left 2,100 Palestinians dead and vast landscapes of destruction behind.
The agreement calls for an end to military action by Israel and Hamas as well as an easing of the Israeli siege that has strangled Gaza for many years.
This is, however, just the most recent of a series of cease-fire agreements reached after each of Israel's periodic escalations of its unremitting assault on Gaza.
Since November 2005 the terms of these agreements have remained essentially the same. The regular pattern is for Israel to disregard whatever agreement is in place, while Hamas observes itas Israel has concededuntil a sharp increase in Israeli violence elicits a Hamas response, followed by even fiercer brutality.
These escalations are called mowing the lawn in Israeli parlance. The most recent was more accurately described as removing the topsoil by a senior U.S. military officer, quoted in Al Jazeera America. .................(more)

(25,453 posts)Could the US even really stop it, at this point? Our military aid is $3 billion, their GDP is almost $300 billion. It's not a trivial amount, but if Netanyahu and Avigdor Lieberman are dead set on colonizing the West Bank, it's not enough to stop them.
I think there needs to be political change in Israel, more than in the US for progress to be made.
BillZBubb
(10,650 posts)By enabling Israel's occupation and brutality, the US makes the slow ethnic cleansing of the West Bank by Israel relatively costless. Losing US support, and that means not just the direct aid, would do huge damage to Israel both politically and economically.

(7,321 posts)I don't know how much Israel receives annually from the EU, I read it somewhere but I forget now. If memory serves, the $ amount is significantly more than the U.S.
Whatever the case, your point still stands, imo.

(16,158 posts)They and the US give about 1.5 billion a year to the Palestinians though.
Hey I have an idea, maybe the Palestinians should negotiate a permanent settlement with the Israelis.

Apparently the EU was funding, but has placed a block on funding some programs.. (Good).

(2,605 posts)reduce the 3 billion yearly payoff by the amount of money that is spent by Israelis to colonize inside the green line. At least.
A simple peace building measure.
What are the chances of that happening?
2banon
(7,321 posts)Until that ends, nothing will change, ever.
The slaughter and colonization of the Palestinians will continue until they've been driven to their ultimate deaths.

Emphasis mine. It's not big news right now. It's off the front page, so it is not being covered by "all news media." All these stories do is to stir up discord on DU, which is why the I/P Group exists.
