In the long dead DU thread below I started a discussion about a cover featuring spider woman's ass. Still think it's sexist comic porn but I can appreciate the skill it took to create it with a live woman.

(68,644 posts)I don't think it objectifies anything, it's like modern or interpretive dance, this woman is part spider.
Here's the male equivalent.
Of course this was alerted. Results: 4:3 to leave it.

(111,116 posts)only that it was a porn star pose that had absolutely no other application.
You really can't do much with your ass hiked up in the air like that.
The real woman pose is considerably different. That one makes sense.

(1 post)Actually there was an article written about how impossible the pose was. It used a CG model to prove it even. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/culture/books/booknews/11067480/Spider-Woman-in-3D-is-terrifying-and-impossible.html
The article was wrong, though. I'm looking at a photo this very moment which nearly duplicates the drawing, and is proof that the drawing's only problem is that it's not very good. If I knew how, I'd show it to you.
Manara has done much better work. The fact that he doesn't do as well here probably means that his work experience at Marvel wasn't very good. Maybe they wouldn't let him do it the way he wanted to. Hell, I don't know. Maybe he's just getting old.

(21,317 posts)The cartoon figure is rather anorexic looking, compared to the real person, for example.

(68,644 posts)But considering that this is comparing a real human being to a drawn cartoon done before the photograph it's astonishing.

(21,317 posts)The buttocks are rather different. The differences are not big, just noticeable.

(9,796 posts)With a couple of notable exceptions (i.e. Power Girl, who's built like a weightlifter), comics has always tended towards a stylized version of athlete builds.

(32,886 posts)That is why her rear end is higher than her head and the top of her body. That caused all the ruckus because to some it seemed an unnatural position. It's not if you are crawling from a higher place down to a lower place.
No one would have said anything if spiderman had been drawn with his rear end elevated crawling downward due to the same situation. It looks completely in line with how spiderman has been drawn.

(30,884 posts)Again, the so-called equivalent Spiderman cover above shows a figure with ass dow, legs flattened out to the sides like a spider.
Again, the illustrator, Milo Manara, is known for erotic illustrations and has posed female subject in a very similar manner for erotica.
I'm a bit puzzled why some hold on so dearly to the idea that women here and elsewhere are being overly sensitive about this.

(32,886 posts)pose.
That is generally what any human would look like crawling down from a ledge to the roof while trying to maintain a profile as low to the ground as possible, which is the entire point of a spiderman/spiderwoman crawl.

(63,166 posts)So they'd have to adopt different postures when descending face-first.
Ms. Drew has the advantage of sticky fingers and superhuman flexibility, so she has more options than a mundane human being.

(32,886 posts)to the spiderwoman pose. If you put them on a ledge and have them crawl down, at various points their poses will look exactly like her.
I'm sure this is what the artist did, looked at video of real people crawling downward and then drew what they looked like at a point.

(6,896 posts)big ass and breasts sharing the center of a page?
genii is WAY out of the bottle on that tacky stuff.
but GREAT publicity scheme here.
let the poutraged do the work.

(6,393 posts)Which keeps things from being too cookie cutter. I haven't seen any Deodato in awhile, but I don't seek it out either. Thankfully, there is no one-style which really defines comics.

(9,796 posts)It was such an annoyance because he's a fairly good artist.

(6,896 posts)Used to have a couple of excellent examples (well, not REALLY mine, but I did swap them for something I wanted ; )
they even passed with Trina Robbin's approval,
but his approach was typically, pretty godawful.
to see folks bashing a good artist certainly doesnt gladden my gander.

(13,598 posts)That photo makes me deeply uncomfortable, for reasons that having nothing whatsoever to do with the sexualisation or lack thereof. I just hope there's a ledge behind her.
Blue_Adept
(6,393 posts)Cause all that's behind her is a green screen that's been photoshopped in with the image of a city.

(13,598 posts)I confess that that possibility hadn't occurred to me - I'd assumed they'd just done it the old-fashioned way.

I honestly didn't think it was possible for that pose to be realistic either but there it is!

I actually thought - hullabaloo around it aside - that the Manara cover is not really that good a piece of art. Her proportions are bad, particularly her face which is oddly flat.
